Question about ethnicity on college apps

What's the general fraction required to be considered of that ethnicity? For example, I am 1/8th mexican, and then the rest of my ethnicity is composed of caucasian background (pole, irish, german). I talked with my ap gov teacher, and he said he couldn't find out any reason why I couldn't put hispanic on my college apps, seeing as how people with 1/8th of an african american genetic makeup are able to receive reparations(sp?) as well as 1/32 of a native american .

I've heard that the general rule is 1/4, but 1/8 is still considered of that ethnicity. Could I put hispanic/white? (or would that be confusing since it would probably be considered a descendant of spain and thus caucasian)

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Well I read in a book (by Maria Hernandez, same woman that wrote A is for Admissions) that if you are half and half, you can put the URM ethnicity only... I'm not sure how advisable this would be... though she also said if you are less than half, then you should list ALL your ethnicities... maybe its better to be considered multiracial?

Hm, I heard that you must stick with the race you wrote on the PSAT? but I'm not sure how true this is?

Is there a portion on the common app where I can list 1/8th hispanic non white and 7/8th caucasian? It would be the most honest way or going about it, as well as being able to claim a partial urm status.
