Question about "first generation"

Hey! I was wondering…
My parents never went to college, and I know that is helpful for getting into some colleges. But, would it hurt that status considering my older brother is already in college, that my aunts/uncles went to college, that my grandparents went to college? Is there a way to phrase it so that I can try to get some type of advantage?

Brown wants to know the college(s) attended by your parents and your siblings. They will never know about your grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. If your parents didn’t go to college, you will be considered first generation – even though in your case it is not technically accurate.

Oh thank God. Coming from a white family in central New Jersey, I had almost lost faith that I could put down anything to set me apart.

Is that really the only thing that distinguishes you from every other student? I doubt that for some reason.

what about the case where one parent graduated from college and one did not. Is this still considered “first generation”?

Probably not.

Well, I meant other than the obvious good grades. I have held several leadership positions in Boy Scouts and will be working on my Eagle project soon. I have also had consistent involvement in Film Club. Plus, I have done a decent amount of community service this year.

you can be 1st Generation and not the 1st sibling, it’s not called “1st sibling” for a reason :)

but if you wanted to pretend you’re 1st generation, they have no way of knowing…correct?

Does anyone know how much weight/importance Brown puts on “first generation” applicants?

it’s taken into consideration
