I will be completing my second unit of foreign language this coming year, so how should I answer the "Have you completed the State of Florida foreign language requirement?" question if I'm submitting my application before school even starts?

If it is my intent to enroll in and complete the second year of foreign language during the upcoming school year should I go ahead and answer yes?

Wow, lots of views but no replies. Bummer. If nobody knows the direct answer to this I’d be grateful if anyone could direct me toward the right person at UCF to get in touch with about this.

Im not sure if you would mark no or yes. I graduated from UCF in 2010 and was in your shoes as a transfer (I am assuming you are also). I answered no on my application and was still accepted. I went on to get my minor in ASL (Completing ASL 1 -4 and 2 additional electives). UCF requires ASL 1-3 to be accepted as meeting the foreign language requirement. Just an FYI, the ASL program at UCF is slowly being faded out so if you anticipate taking ASL 3 or 4 you need to let the registar/advising office know. Also, UCF does not accept ASL as the foreign language requirement for MOST majors. I was a Social Work major and they accepted it but I had to fight the school about it. If you are pursuing a ‘social science’ or CommDis degree then they SHOULD accept it but if not then they DO NOT accept ASL. The minor and certificate ended in 2009 (I got it, because I filled for the minor in 2008 as a transfer). The classes are always full and there are very few of them. Many people end up taking some ASL classes at Valencia CC near by. Good luck!! Deff send Joseph Murray (ASL Program Coordinator) an e-mail letting him know you are interested in ASL classes and ask about the classes & minor/certificate. FYI, the ceritificate you automatically get if you take ASL 1-3 and I think 1 elective and the minor in ASL 1-4 and 2 ASL electives. If you have other questions, PM me.

SallyNYU, If UCF is phasing out ASL program, is UCF also working toward phasing out its Communication Science and Disorders dept.? I plan to apply next year for admission to CS&D master’s programs at various universities.

u can say yes but in the section for classes ur taking just put in the language class ur taking now,

i have a question were u given a section to write an essay cuz i wasnt and when i went to review and submit my application it showed a section for the essay so i went back to check if i missed it but it still wasnt there

As far as I know the CommDis dept is not going anywhere. Thats a big dept with a lot of students. The CommDis department shares offices with the ASL department but they are actually differernt departments so if the ASL program is canceled it wont affect the CommDis program. Many classes I took (esp ASL classes) were filled with CommDis majors. Its also a pretty easy program to get into at the Masters level if you have good grades and good EC, since many of the undergraduate students dont go on to get their Masters right away. Good luck with your applications next year!
