Foreign language

Hey guys,

im confused about something. I know this question has been asked before and I was certain i understood the answer but now something has me even more confused. I thought that in order to satisfy the foreign language requirement for UC's you either had to have 2 years (4 semesters) of high school foreign language with a C or better, or you had to have ONE SEMESTER of a foreign language in college.

Well, in highschool these were my grades

spanish 1: Fall semester "B"/Spring Semester "C"
Spanish 2: Fall semester "C-"/Spring Semester "D-"

So, in other words my failure ofthe spring semester of my spanish 2 class in high school was not enough to satisfy my IGETC foreign language requirement. So this Spring semester (my last semester before transfer in fall 2010) I enrolled in a sign language class thinking that I only needed to take ASL (sign language) 1 and by passing that with a "C" or better I would be done with that requirement.

However, in filling out my updates for my berkeley application one of the sections in the IGETC part says "Language other than English (LOTE) -- 2 semesters or 3 quarters at the college level; or 3 yrs of a language in high school w/grades of C or better..."

So do I need to take ASL 2 now, since it states "2 semesters...at the college level"? If so, IM SCREWED. I only have one semester left before transfer and that is impossible to take both of those classes at the same time...am I just confused again? SO is it just ASL 1 or do I have to take ASL 1 and ASL 2 in order to qualify?

PLEASE HELP.

thank you.

^mine doesnt even ask for foreign language, it’s worrying me seeing all you guys with slots for foreign language.

The specifics of IGETC are set by the Community College; they are not set by the UC system. Because of this, the requirements to fulfill IGETC differ across CCC’s.

UC Berkeley’s Essential Skills program requires TWO semesters of a foreign language. HOWEVER, if you are going to be IGETC certified INSTEAD of doing the Essential Skills program… Then you only need as many semesters of a foreign language as are required by your CCC.

Confusing, right?

Basically follow this logic:
Are you going to be IGETC certified?
—Yes
--------Does your Community College require one semester of a foreign language?
--------------Yes
---------------------You only need one semester of a foreign language.
--------------No
---------------------You need as many semesters of a foreign language as your CCC says.
—No
---------------------Because you won’t be IGETC certified, you are going to have to do the UC Berkeley Essential Skills program and will need two semesters of a foreign language.

So, I go to SMC. I am going to be IGETC certified. SMC only requires one semester of a foreign language to be IGETC certified. I took Japanese 1. Therefore, that’s all I need to do. :)

I go to Mount SAC and it doesn’t “require” a semester of a foreign language.

It just says on the IGETC page:

LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH:
“The minimum proficiency required is met by completing one of the courses listed below or by completion of two years of high school study in the same language.”

I took THREE years of Spanish in high school, so I assume that suffices.

But on the Berkeley application website, it says this:

Foreign Language: 3rd semester college-level course; or two different languages with courses at the 2nd semester college-level (3 or more years of a language in high school w/grades of C or better may count as one of the 2 languages). American Sign Language is not acceptable for this requirement.

I don’t understand. Does this mean I should have taken another foreign language at Mt. SAC?

I am also confused about this question. Is a “C-” passing? Would it qualify as a pass for the foreign language requirement?

Yes, C- is a passing grade. But C- is below C, so it is not “C or above”.

Do we have to input our high school grades if we already completed one semester of a foreign language at a CCC? Would we have to input them if we clicked that we completed three years of foreign language?

What if you dont remember or have a record of your HS grades for the Foreign language? Should I just put C-s for them all because I have a hunch that I received staight Cs in both spanish 2 or 3. Or should i just leave that blank and tick the complete 3 years of foreign language box?

bump @killajatt’s post.

also, which semester do we input? since high school has two semesters…

KillaJatt, just check the box… Someone on here asked a rep at Berkley this question and told them to just check the box…

that is weird, depending on which school you go to determines how many semesters of FL you take?

drek’thar is completely wrong: if you got a C- in high school in ur FL class then you still get credit for it. a C- is still a C

@ lakerforever24

How do you know? Did a Berkeley representative notify you? I received a C- for my first semester of Spanish 1 in high school. Should I check the box? Would I also have to provide my grades? Thanks.

this is from assist

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

You may satisfy this requirement by:

Receiving a grade of C- or higher in high school courses comparable to the
third year level of any language other than the language of high school
instruction.

-For many students who attended high school outside of the United States, where
English is not the language of instruction, then English is your foreign
language. For example, if you went to high school in China where the language
of instruction was Mandarin and took the 3rd level of English, then English is
considered your foreign language.

Passing a college course comparable to the second semester of a foreign
language as taught at Berkeley.

Achieving a score of 590 or better on the SAT II Foreign Language Subject
Exam.

Achieving a score of 3 or better on any AP Exam in a language other than
English.

Obtaining a grade of C or better on the General Certificate “A” or “O” Level
Foreign Language Exam.

I am very curious about this too. I’m trying to fill out the FL requirement and I have two separate grades for each semester:
German 1 A+ (Fall) A- (Spring)
German 2 B+ (Fall) B+(Spring)
German 3 A- (Fall) B- (Spring)
