I was looking at Tech's undergrad admissions site, and they say that they add a .5 for AP classes. What about honors classes? Do they count for anything? I just finished my freshman year in high school, and for my core curriculum classes, only have an unweighted 3.25, with three of the four being honors classes. Next year, I'll have two AP classes and four honors classes, and in my junior year, I'll probably have three AP classes and two honors classes (these are all core curriculum classes, again). So, will all of the honors classes mean nothing with only the five AP classes being the only weights?

I was under the impression that if you made an A or a B in
Honors AND AP classes, that Georgia Tech would add on .5
to your GPA. They may have changed it, however, when I
applied, this was the case.

Anyone else know?

Since there are no national standards for honors classes, as there are for AP and IB programs Georgia Tech cannot fairly award weight for honors classes. Honors classes are calculated as regular classes for the purpose of GPA, but the overall rigor of your classes is taken into account when your application is reviewed.

Georgia Tech recalculates the GPA that your high school gives you. They use a standard 4.0 grading scale but only factor in the core curriculum courses (see below). For students taking AP, IB, or College level classes, they award an additional one-half point (0.5) for each course.
Core Curriculum: Grading Scale:
English (4 Units) A = 4.0
Math (4 Units) B = 3.0
Science (3 Units) C = 2.0
Social Science (3 Units) D = 1.0
Foreign Language (2 Units) F = 0.0

Example: If you take AP English and make a B, we would award you 3.5 pts. Last year the competitive range (25th-75th percentile) of high school GPAs was 3.60-3.96 .
Eh… Well, getting conflicting answers here. If this is true though, I think I’m screwed in my chances of getting in because of a 3.25 in core curriculum in my freshman year.

The GT website actually states everything in the previous post…

So… What do you guys suggest I do at this point, in terms of improvement and making my chances of getting into Tech higher? My core curriculum classes for my freshman year average out to:

Honors Math: 89
Honors Lit.: 88.5
Honors Biology: 87
French 2: 84.5

These are unweighted, by the way.
