I'm looking to buy some open/closed headphones, and I'm wondering whether or not open headphones is a good idea since I will be living with a roommate in a dorm. I like the idea of the better sound quality with the open's, but I don't know how much sound leakage there would be. Does anyone have any experience with this and if so, what could you tell me?

Some open headphones leak more than others, but in general, stay away from, but don’t completely avoid open headphones. Just think of it as if you were playing ****ty speakers from your laptop. Your roommate, if there, will likely be able to hear everything. In college, using open headphones is pretty dumb anyways unless it’s for gaming. You’re restricted to your room (can’t use it at the library and actually, neighbours might even be able to hear it) and it can seriously annoy your roommate. Better safe than sorry … there are great closed headphones out there though

Well I was planning to use them mainly for gaming anyway, I’d probably use earbuds for most other things. I guess the decision of open vs closed would have to be based on what my roommate thinks of it.

i have open headphones loud as hell so yeah prolly shouldnt get those

Eh if you have noise canceling ones opens aren’t necessarily bad-- I have a pair of Bose QuietComfort, and the sound quality is good and it doesn’t leak.

Open headphones leak sound which is bad for you and the people around you. Also stay away from Beats by Dre and Bose…extremely overpriced brands.

I use these. Great sound and bass, they fold up nicely, very strong cable, and they’re really comfortable. MDR-V6’s have been around since the 80s and are still going strong.
