Question about high school GPAs?

I saw a list of average high school GPAs of freshman students admitted into the UC schools. It said that admitted freshmen to UCLA had an average GPA of 4.37, average for Berkeley is 4.19, average for Davis is 4.08, etc. Is the 4.37 GPA for UCLA is the UC GPA or the weighted GPA? I'm hearing that it's the UC GPA but I find that kinda hard to believe since its so close to the max UC GPA of 4.4.

Thanks.

UCLA is a bit lower than UCB if I remember correctly. It definitely isn’t 4.37.

Yeah I’ve been wondering about this too. On the UC website, it says that UCLA’s average GPA is 4.11:

[University of California - Freshman admission profile](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/campuses/ucla/freshman-profile/index.html)

Averages
High School GPA: 4.11
ACT Composite Score: 30
SAT Critical Reading: 657
SAT Mathematics: 701
SAT Writing: 680

However, on the UCLA website, the average GPA is 4.34:

[Profile of Admitted Freshmen, Fall 2011 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_fr/Frosh_Prof11.htm)

All applicants: 3.90
Admits: 4.34
Enrolled: 4.25

That’s obviously a HUGE difference. What irks me the most is that if 4.11 is the real average, then I’m not that below average in terms of GPA (mine is 4.09 uncapped and 4.00 capped). However, in comparison to the 4.34, my GPA is terribly below average and will probably mean rejection.

That UCLA web page seems to indicate that the 4.34 avg. is uncapped (max 5.0)…
