I'm debating between taking Arabic and Russian, and I'm having a difficult time choosing. I am sincerely interested in both languages. Any suggestions? Like...which language class generally has more attractive girls in it...or anything like that...

girls- probably russian if you're in the u.s. but during terrorism these days, arabic doesn't seem so bad either.

Don't take either of those, but I'm an Olin bum (german major+work there). Arabic seems to be a bigger program with a bunch more people taking it. It's apperantly pretty hard, from what I've heard, but maybe those people (who have told me that) just have trouble with languages in general. (And of course there's a new alphabet either way.)

I'd point you towards Arabic if I had to make the decision for you, because it's a larger program with more oppurtunities to use it on campus. Talk to your advisor, too, they might be able to offer some insight.

Yeahh...I guess Arabic would be a little easier since I'm more familiar with the language (I'm Muslim), and I know how to read it pretty well; however, I don't know what I'm reading. That's why I was leaning towards Russian because it would be a brand new experience...

Take what you're moost interested in, if you can decide. All I'm saying is that it seems to me, someone who hasn't taken either, that Arabic has a larger/more established program at Tufts.

I'm obviously biased because I'm a Russian native speaker, but I happen to love the language. From the kids I've talked to at Tufts, the kids in Russian seem to be having a better time - I know kids who insist upon taking only three classes in the semesters when they take Arabic b/c they know it will require a lot of effort. If you speak it, though, it may be different.

If you DO take Russian, def try to get classes with Tanya Gassel and Vida Johnson. I've also heard nice things about Carleton. I've heard Sloane is a cool guy and does well in the lit classes, but language classes are just not his thing. For into, try Petrov if you can get her.
