Question about MAJORS

how does it work at brown, can someone explain to me in depth?

isnt it like, no majors, you study whatever you want without required courses?

Basic competency in writing, plus you must meet the requirements of a major (called concentrations). Your electives are your own - there are no breadth requirements.

Right, so there are no GENERAL requirements for everybody, but every student must complete a set of requirements for a major of their choice.

Officially, majors are called "concentrations" at Brown, but a lot of students just call them majors.

You are required to take at least one major. A lot of students do two.

We don't have minors, but if you just want to take a bunch of classes in a particular area without filling the requirements for the major, that's fine (it just doesn't show up on your transcript / diploma that you did anything official).

You are required to pass 30 classes, and you are "expected" to take at least 32 (4 per semester).

You must demonstrate competency in writing, which basically means that if a professor thinks your writing isn't up to snuff, they tell you to take a writing class. I'm not exactly sure how this works, but I don't think it happens too often.
