question about majors

so i'm applying to michigan as a transfer into the LSA college. my question is, should i apply for a major that's easy to get into and then later on switch to the major of my choice. my goal is to major in cell & molecular biology: how hard is it to get into that major as a transfer? and would this plan work? thanks!

umm… anyone?

bump(10char)…

Wellllll, that depends. If you’re transferring as a sophomore, you don’t need to declare a major now, but if you’re a junior, you have to declare one. I don’t think it’s a matter of whether or not this major is easy to get into or not. LSA is accepting you based on your stats, not major. Remember how “everyone” in Orgo says his major is Pre-med but ends up changing his mind after he took a few classes? I’m pretty sure you’ll pick your major once you meet with an advisor since you’re a transfer. :)

[CMB Concentration + Requirements](<a href=“http://www.lsa.umich.edu/biology/CMBConcentration.asp"]CMB”>http://www.lsa.umich.edu/biology/CMBConcentration.asp)

The PDF file at the bottom of the page is easier to look at. Things to keep in mind are…

Did you take classes to fulfill the pre-requisites? (If not, taking them now is probably better. Most transfer students I’ve talked to are a semester behind in requirements which means they’ll have to take summer courses to make up for it)

Are you able to finish the required courses in a reasonable amount of time? (2 to 3 years depending on when you transfer)

If you think you’re going to major in CMB, then choose it when you’re applying. It’s not going to hurt you. I hope that helped, and good luck! :)

well right now, at my current university, i’m majoring in biomedical sciences and i’m taking chemistry (its lab) and biology (its lab also). so i’m pretty sure that these classes are prerequisites of cell & molecular biology. thanks for the help!
