I've seen that IU Bloomington is requiring 7 semesters of math in order to be admitted for fall 2012.

My daughter took three years of math in high school, Algebra 2, Geometry and Pre-Calculus and is not taking math her senior year. She just got an email inviting her to apply for the Selective Scholarships, which I believe means she's been accepted to the U. Any ideas why she would be accepted if she doesn't have 7 semesters of math? Is it because she's taken all the levels of math they require even though it wasn't all in high school?

The common maths that the average student will take in high school are Algebra I, Geometry, Trig/ Algebra 2, and Pre Calc/ Calc I
I your daughter has taken these maths then she has all the requirements needed for any school. Also even if she was behind for whatever reason and for example only got through trig/algebra 2, then most school will provide a math class for her to take which would be the lowest level math they offer. This is not a big deal because a lot of college students struggle in the area of math. As long as your daughter has the class requirements to graduate from her high school then she has all the necessary requirements for college.
Just a side note. When you receive stuff that is telling you to apply for scholarships and stuff usually the situation with that is that every high school student in your area is receiving the same information about scholarships. Normally scholarship information about the most common scholarships offered is sent to all students that will be graduating seniors. I don’t know the full details about what information you were given, but if you are still worried your daughter doesn’t have the full requirements for the scholarship simply look up the specifications of the scholarships you wish to apply for and you will find out what your daughter needs.

@hkem - That’s what I was speculating. I was just surprised since it seemed clear they were now asking for 7 semesters of high school math, and she only took 6. If they had just said you need to have taken Algebra 2, Geometry and Pre-Calc or Calc, I would have assumed she was fine.

@PrepRamblr - Thanks. But I know that the requirements to graduate high school are not always what is required to get into a college, and IU posting that they require 7 semesters of math made me wonder since she has only taken 6. And, I checked in IUs FAQs, and you only get the invitation to apply for the Selective Scholarships if you’ve been accepted to the University.

Algebra I taken in middle school is still “high school” math. Same for other high school level classes that are often taken “early” by kids who are ready for the material at a young age.
