Question about merit based scholarships

My son is planning on studying mechanical engineering and will be applying to Clemson when the process opens up next month. Does anyone have experience they are willing to share regarding merit based scholarships, particulalry for out of state students. In particular, how close was the school's net price calculator estimate to what was actually awarded and perhaps more importantly, how does the scholarship received for freshman year change for subsequent years?

I don’t know about the net price calculator but Clemson has laid it out what you need to do to get a merit based scholarship: <a href=“Office of Student Financial Aid | Clemson University”>Office of Student Financial Aid | Clemson University;

Just as a point of reference - my d was accepted last year - out of state - 34ACT 1470SAT and top 5% in her class and got $15,000/yr

Pierre0913: You are always so helpful on this board. Thank you. Thanks for the link. With a 34 ACT my son should qualify for a Non-Resident Merit Scholarship, though his HS does not rank, so it is hard to predict how they will handle that and subsequently how much he might receive.

ahsmuoh: We are hoping our son would qualify for the same scholarship your daughter has received. Did they guarantee that the $15,000 would continue for four years? (understanding that maintaining a certain GPA would probably be a requirement…)

If your high school does not rank, they’ll look at your sons GPA and high school profile and guess-timate your son’s high school ranking.

Yes. My dd’s hs also does not rank but by the profile she is at least top 10%.
She did not end up choosing Clemson but if I remember correctly there was GPa requirement to keep it all 4 years.

I think you need at least a 3.0 GPA to keep the scholarship.

Yes, this is what I have learned. Now to craft some sort of family contract with DS setting consequences if his GPA falls below that…

That might be a good idea if you’re concerned at all haha

Thanks for the info. He’ll be getting his application submitted on the 1st!
