My kid has the stats to get into the faculty of arts, but not quite for arts and science. Here is her situation.
She has a 3.71 unweighted gpa for 10,11, so that fulfills the A- requirement, and she got a 33 on the ACT so that’s looking good. But she got a B+ in pre-calc., which she thinks is a deal-breaker, but she’s currently enrolled in AP calculus and has a solid A average at the moment.
My question is, might they accept an A- or above in calculus in place of the stated requirement of an A- in pre-calc?
I should add that she would be happy to go there just as a faculty of arts student, but figures why not try for arts and science?
To use the terminology common here on CC McGill can go from being a safety to out of reach in a very narrow band of stats. My guess is that McGill Arts and Sciences is a “match”. There is a good chance for acceptance but not a certainty. She will most likely get her acceptance for Arts some time before her Arts and Science decision. (McGill accepts from the top down.) Fortunately she can apply to both programs on the same application. Good luck!
Thanks tomsr. That’s the plan. Apply to both and hope for the best. I was just hoping someone with this particular situation could shed light on it.
You are so right about McGill. She had given up hope because her SAT verbal was 10 points under the minimum. Took the ACT as a Hail Mary pass and got a 33. Boom! McGill is back in play.
I just started looking at how the school organizes degrees and options so go easy on me if I’ve got this wrong, but it looks like it would be pretty normal to leave McGill with a dual major, or double bachelors? And some of the soft science degrees, like cognitive science or economics, can be earned from the faculty of arts, or the faculty of arts and science, but would be a BA from arts and a BS from arts and science?
Does that sound right?
She’s planning to be an English major, and maybe get a second major in a “sciency” discipline, but it would be better if that other degree was a BS instead of a BA. Hence the interest in getting into faculty of arts and science.
The degree that McGill offers in the Arts and Science program is the “Bachelor of Arts and Science”. I am not up on the current requirements but several majors are offered in both faculties with variations in requirements. Also any AP credits that can be applied would give more flexibility on class scheduling.

Unfortunately her school doesn’t offer a lot of AP classes. She’ll have 4 done when she graduates and a couple of dual enrollment college classes, which McGill has accepted on a case by case basis.
Way late to the discussion. My son is a U2 Econ Major (Poli Sci minor) in the Faculty of Arts. At McGill, there is ENORMOUS benefit to taking four classes per semester versus five. (The McGill rigor and workload are very, very real.) Lots of kids will take a class or two during “Maymester” which is a one month semester. Highly recommended. My point is even a few APs and DE classes will be extremely helpful…especially since science classes and CS classes are a ton of work.
