Any insight on this school as to how many are accepted every year? I am sure this is posted somewhere…sorry! Also, i saw they give in state tuition for BFAs which is great for us…any comments from current students about this program? It is on our list of schools and I have requested some info from them as well. What about how selective academically?
My S is a member of the Montclair BFA MT class of 2019. I don’t know the exact number of offers that Montclair made this year but I do know that there are 22 kids in in his class…12 boys and 10 girls. I believe that 20-22 is a typical size class for that program. There was also a wait list this year, although I don’t know how many, if any, came off that list. I heard that there were around 700 applicants for this years class. I expect that number will rise next year as Montclair has started offering instate tuition to all its BFA students.
Clay says that 3% are accepted into MT, and he says over 700 apply each year (I’m sure it will be more next year with the tuition break). He does not overaccept and works very hard to keep the class size at around 20 with a balanced number of males and females. He works off a WL to make sure the class is not too big or has too many of one gender. Wikipedia says that 65% are accepted academically (last year they said 56%). There is an honors college for those qualified and interested. My daughter is class of '17 and loves the program. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions!
Would love any more details you might share about the program, Calliene. My daughter is planning to apply for 2017
entrance!
One question I have is about whether the school has more of a residential or commuter feel to it. Thanks!!
Ooops! just saw your answer to this question on another page…does your daughter mix much with non-MT students? Thank you!
@ActTex - The dorms are full so about 6,000 live on campus, which is way bigger than the small liberal arts college I went to. And yes, my daughter has lots of friends who are non-MT. She chose a non-MT roommate freshman year (has since had her own room) and has gotten involved in a couple of organizations at school. She also seems to meet a lot of kids who are music majors since she practices in the music building and there are hang-out places there. I would say though that most of her friends are in the arts in some capacity: MT, Art (her freshman roommate was an art major), Acting, Film, Dance, and Music. And almost all the BFA kids live on campus. The music majors also now get the tuition break, so there will be more from out of state. There are sororities (though no sorority houses) if that is your thing; it is not my daughter’s thing, but she has an MT friend who got involved with that. Of course there are a lot of commuters, but mostly those are in the few gen-ed classes she has, so she doesn’t know them well.
My daughter just spent her Fall Freshman semester on campus and is now back for Spring. She is not a MT student, but is choosing one of the sciences.
I just wanted to say that even though we live in-state, my daughter stays on campus every weekend, she does not have a car. The only weekends she comes home is if she has to visit the doctor or if we have a family commitment. There’s always something going on or she uses the weekends to study or work on projects, takes the train on Friday nights to NYC, uses the shuttle to go shopping on Saturdays or Sundays, etc.
