Question about my chances

My information (I'm entering my senior year in the fall):

SAT: 800 Critical Reading, 660 Writing, 620 Math.

AP: Have taken 5 AP classes, one sophmore year, four this year. Got a 5 on my sophmore year test (AP US Government). Took AP Biology, Psychology, US History, and English Language this year. Am taking four more senior year.

Grades: 3.74 GPA on a 4 point scale. Top 10% of my class, about 220 students in my class. Only two non-honors classes this year, and neither were fluffy extracuriculars, one was a Classics course, the other a course studying different Eastern/Western philosophies. The closest to a fluff course I've taken is Gym in 9th grade, because it is required to graduate.

Extracuriculars: Soccer for four years, was JV Captain in my Sophmore year, junior year my varsity team won the district championship and went to the state semi-finals. I was voted Unsung Hero for the season. I've played tennis since my sophmore year. Also am a member of the Ski-Club since freshman year, and am now a member of the National Honor Society.

Background: I come from a white, middle class family in Mass. My father went to MIT, and my mother went to Penn State. Two younger sisters, one entering college two years after me, the other four years after me. I'm very well read. Sometimes I get obsessive about certain subjects- for example, in a two week period I read 5 biographies of Julius Caesar. Nothing extraordinary has happened in my life. I work full time during the summer in a warehouse, have since sophmore year.

Recommendations: Probably from my AP US History teacher, who graduated from Northeastern, and either my AP Psychology, AP Government, or AP Language (graduated from Georgetown) teachers, I can't decide. Advice there would be helpful.

Major Interests:
Political Science, Economics, Business.

Colleges I'm looking at:
George Washington University (would like to get into the Honors Program)
Northeastern University (would like to get into the Honors Program, third choice)
University of Michigan
Georgetown University (would love to go here)
Boston College (second choice)
Boston University (would like to get into the Honors Program)
New York University
American University (would like to get into the Honors Program)

I really appreciate any advice, including other schools to look at, thanks in advance!

Also, I feel like I should explain what I am looking for. I already know that these are schools I could possibly and, for some, definitely get into. What I’m hoping is that people can give me a second opinion on my chances, and tell me some things I could do to improve my shots, especially my chances of getting financial aid (these are expensive schools and my parents have two other kids to send to college so money really is a big factor).
Thanks again, and I’m more then happy to clarify things.

I applied to/looked into many of the schools you plan on applying to last year. Here’s what I think about each: Just to let you know, your gpa is a little bit on the lower side for many of these honors programs but I don’t know whether your gpa is 3.74 unweighted or weighted.

As for fin. aid…most of the schools if not all that you are applying to are notorious for giving poor aid, unfortunately. I would highly advise you to look into some public state schools that have good programs in your majors for safeties…to ensure that you have options that are financially feasible (ie Penn State, University of Maryland-CP, Mich. state etc). Oh and I’d suggest to look into Johns Hopkins (as more of a reach) as that seems to fit into your general scheme of schools.

When it comes to recommendations…it does not matter what school your professor is an alumni of. Give your recommendation forms to the teachers that like you best, know how to write best, and can share illuminating examples of your intellect/passion/personality.

George Washington University: Match
Northeastern University: Safety to low match.
University of Michigan: Match.
Georgetown University: Reach
Boston College: Low reach.
Boston University: Low match.
New York University: Low reach.
American University: Safety.

That GPA is unweighted; for some reason my guidance counselors refuse to tell us our weighted GPA’s. Also, thank you for the suggestions on other schools; I looked at Johns Hopkins and it seems interesting, I’ll try and set up a visit there, even if it is a reach. The thing about professor alumni not mattering is interesting-my guidance counselors had told me otherwise. Any other suggestions/chance thoughts are cool, I appreciate all advice.

Anyone else have any advice?

good test scores and excellent recs, colleges LOVE APs so thats a strong point on your resume and BC might be a low reach as well as GWU honors, but the university itself is no prob GTown might be a high match but the rest look solid for you, you should get into about 4 or 5 of those 8 schools. GOOD LUCK!!
