Not sure what the situation exactly is. As I understand she took the PSAT in 2008 when she was a junior, with the expectation she would graduate in Spring 2010 and join a college in 2010. And that she did not graduate in 2010 as she changed schools. Is my understanding right? If my understanding is right, I think you are out of luck, but I would strongly suggest that you talk to NMSC and ask them for advice. Given below are the rules for obtaining a scholarship.

As I read this, you are eligible when you are in your senior year and would join the college in the following fall. If you are a senior for two years, that might not meet the condition.

exactly – right and exactly what I thought… .I just wonder if there is a place where I can double check that she was in fact a finalist. …

I have appealed our financial aid and let them know of this info since they wouldn’t know otherwise … I’m not hopeful that it’ll help in my plea for more $$ but I figure it doesn’t hurt to ask.

If you know the PSAT score and your state, the cut-off scores for 2008 year i.e. joining college in 2010 has been posted on CC. You can search for that and that will tell you if she would have made it to the semi-finalist or not. If she has been in the Senior year for two years in two different schools, the first school (where she took the test) should know.

If you confirm that PSAT scores was equal or above the cut off for your state for that year (it varies a little bit from year to year) you could talk to NMSC. However, the chances that will agree to something that was done in a past year is not very high. They are busy with the current batch i.e. those who took the PSAT in 2009 and may not want to reopen the case of someone who took it in 2008. Does not hurt to try (other than phone call and some time), but be prepared they may so no.

Also, did she ever submit the National Merit form. If she has not done it and was eligible in 2009 to do so, NMSC would most probably say we did not receive the form then and cannot act on it now even if you did not receive the notification.

*I have appealed our financial aid and let them know of this info since they wouldn’t know otherwise *

???

What info did you tell them? did you tell them that your D is a NMF?

I think there is some misunderstanding. Was your D named a NMSF in the fall of her senior year? If so, her school would have given her a large packet to fill out and return to them (including writing an essay). Then the school would have added their part…recommendation and transcript…and then they would have sent the packet to NMCorporation.

Then, in February of your D’s senior year, you would have received notification that she was named a NMF. Your D would also have to have sent her SAT scores to NMCorp as well.

When did your D change schools, what state was she in when she took the PSAT, and what was her PSAT score?

i think she was a semifinalist – not a finalist … she transfered in her junior year but graduation requirements were different so she had to stay another year to complete high school. She did not qualify as a finalist, however…

Can someone point me to where the 2008 PSAT scores are listed for semi-finalist status? I can’t find that.

The school she’s likely go to did offer scholarship $$ for semi and finalists so I mentioned this to the FA committee to see if she could qualify. I know that she doesn’t officially qualify but it was a last ditch effort to try to get more $$ so we can afford the school.

If she was semi finalist, and you have documentation to show that she was semi finalist and did not get NMF, you can show that to the school. I do not think NMSC will actually send a confirmation at this time but their letter or some letter from the HS school and PSAT scores should confirm that.
