Hello! I just found out that I am accepted to the Oxford College at Emory and I am beyond happy(despite being rejected from Arts and Sciences). Emory University is one of my top two choices and I just want to know more about it and Oxford.

Here is my biggest concern about becoming part of the wonderful Oxford College:

Are Oxford students looked down upon by the other college at Emory since it is "easier" to get in because of its lower average test scores and grades?

It’s harder from what I hear because they want to “weed out” the students that go on to Emory. Oxford College is strictly focused a core curriculum for students that will continue at Emory.

There are elitist people at all top schools who will always try to find a reason to look down on other people.

I graduated early from Oxford last semester and haven’t heard any negative comments from anyone who started at the College of Arts and Sciences. You should also be aware that the statistics online are for admitted students, not enrolled students. For a variety of reasons, more of the top students in the CAS applicant pool choose other institutions than at the Oxford campus. Consequently, the difference between the students who actually enroll (compared to those that are admitted) at Oxford and the College of Arts and Sciences is negligible.

Thanks so much for your response! Your first line is completely true.
I’ve read several times online that the social life at Oxford is basically non-existent, to what extent is that true? I am not expecting something like parties every single night, etc, but was there always something for you or you and your friends to do there outside of academics?

There are monthly tavern parties hosted by social clubs (our version of Greek life–I was in one). Also, there’s a shuttle between Oxford and Atlanta that’s fairly regular on weekends (less regular the other day). Campus life also does a fairly good job of hosting events. Parties tend to be held in people’s dorms.

If I got into Ox but not emory (waitlist, basically my essays were bad because I’m… stupid?, otherwise borderline overqualified), how fast could I transfer with 12 APs with 5’s. You said you graduated early.

Oxford would grant you up to 16 hours of AP credit (you would have to choose from among the AP tests for which you have the requisite score). I’d expect to be able to complete Oxford in 3 semesters, if I were in your shoes.

Just two more things to ask you and I’ll stop! I promise!

I am very interested in the biological sciences and chemistry and I plan to pursue a career in the academia world, doing research and whatnot. So if you happen to be a science major or know people that are such, I am wondering if freshmen/sophomores at Oxford have opportunities to work at some professors’ lab. It sounds like the faculty at Oxford focus on teaching rather than their own research, which is great, but do they also have labs that Oxford students can work in and gain some laboratory experience and skills?

Secondly, I want to know your opinion on the size of Oxford. Because it is so small, have you ever gotten bored of your peers? Do you basically know everyone there? Do you like it?

Any other thing you would like to point out would be much appreciated! Thank you so much.

I will answer your questions via private message. Also, if you’ve recently been admitted to Oxford (or are the parent of someone who has) please feel free to PM me. As someone who graduated from Oxford last semester, I’m more than happy to try to answer any questions or concerns you have or to refer you to someone who can.
