question about Pass/fail

I have two questions. I need to take one more math class at some point. I have a choice between calculus and statistics. I am not a math person. I especially do not enjoy algebra. College Algebra was just about my least favorite class ever. I like Geometry slightly better. Which class would a person like me have better luck in?

Question two: How terrible would it look if I took it Pass/Fail? I don't expect to fail but I would rather not have a C mess up my GPA.

Well, you should check with an advisor to figure out the consequences of taking it pass/fail. For example, does taking calc pass/fail satisfy whatever math requirement you have? What about med school/grad school/etc, where you might aspire to go in the future? Is there a limit on how many courses you can take pass/fail?

If everything checks out, usually it's no big deal to have a few courses taken pass/fail, unless they are core courses for your major.

An understanding of statistics will probably be more useful later on in life. If you only have to take one course, I'd say go with stats.

I'm assuming you are in high school...

If you want to major in anything related to science/math/engineering, then take calc. If not, take stats. Your school probably has an individual policy on pass/fail classes. You may able to change from a graded course to pass/fail partway through if you are not doing as well, but don't automatically think you can't succeed!

Deleted post, I thought this was a thread in the premed forum.

Sorry, no I am not in high school at all. I am a junior in college. I am majoring in East Asian Studies and Political Science but my school requires that you take one class above college Alg for a B.A and your choices are Calc or Stats. I have no desire to be a doctor so that is not an issue.

Pick stats, calc has no practical usage in your major.

Stats, it's more calculator-based. You can take a class pass/fail as long as it's not related to your major.

You may also want to check with your school about using P/F for a degree requirement. At some schools, including the one where I work, you cannot take a course P/F if it is intended to fulfill a degree requirement.

Take stats, it's a lot more useful for your major. You don't have to be good in math to understand it.

^Contrary, you do need a graphing calculator and math in statistics. See my thread on "My [statistics] Professor Worships His Graphing Calculator" for examples.

So you have to be good at math to use a calculator?

stats is a lot less "math" than calc is.

punching things into a calculator isn't math...

Are you aware I have two questions.

Are you allowed to take non-electives pass/fail? I know many schools don't allow that..

Please see my previous post. It is important to check with the school to see if they will accept a P/F option on a degree requirement. Some won't ... and if you take a degree requirement P/F, and the school won't count it, you could end up taking math TWICE instead of once.
