Question About Premed

What do premed students usually major in? Biology? Biochemistry? Psychology? If anyone knows, please help me out. Thanks.

I just finished my first year of college as a pre-med. You can major in whatever you want (science or non-science) as long as you also complete all the pre-med reqs, such as biology, chemistry, organic chem, physics, etc. So (for example) if you want to be a history major, that's fine, but make sure you take bio, chem, etc. as well. It is a myth that med schools look down on applicants who are non-science majors. You should major in whatever you like the best, because if you're interested in your work, you'll get better grades. To give you an example, I'm friends with a girl who is actually an art major but is doing pre-med as well.

Would I be better prepared for the MCAT and med school with a major in the sciences such as biology though?

Your first 2 years of med school are science classes, and you won't be at a disadvantage without a science major. At least a third of my husband's med school class at UChicago was non-science, so obviously they did well on the MCAT, too. Just make sure you prep thoroughly.

You can major in virtually anything now a days for med school, as long as you get the required courses in. They actually prefer a broader background now.
