At my school, all sophomores are required to take the PSAT. Will this initial score have any bearing on potential National Merit scores? Will these scores be taken into account? Will they be purged?
Thanks!

Nope, only the Junior scores determine NMS eligibility.

Taking the test in 10th grade will better prepare you for the one that matters in the 11th grade. Feel fortunate that your school is requiring this. A lot of schools do not realize the importance of this test nor do they care.

I was sad. I got a qualifying score this year, but I'm only a sophomore. I just hope I do as well next year...

sishu7, do not worry about it. Just work hard at school and you will do even better at PSAT next year. Most students improve their PSAT score from Soph. to Jr. My S had his score jump 28 pts from his sophomore to his junior year.
