Question about rank in my (highly competitive) school.

My school doesn't officially rank but according to data that I've seen the top 10% is only 4.0s (and i believe one 3.97). That's how competitive the school is. I have a 3.7 and im in the top 20%. Would this rank put me out of the running for highly selective schools even taking into account how skewed the ranking is? Also the school is only for juniors and seniors (you have to apply to get in) so the rank doesn't accurately reflect 4 years of academic competition between the same body of students. Would this be considered?

It probably depends on what exactly your school is. If it’s Mid Ohio Local Public High and Intermediate, that ranking won’t look very good. If you’re at Andover, on the other hand, it’ll look perfectly adequate.

Basically, it depends on how smart the 4.0 kids are. If they’re all 27-ACT type, it won’t help you.

@nhdmaniac It’s ranked top ten on a national list and is considered the best school in my state. Numerous Ivys every year.

Then it shouldn’t be bad. If it’s a recognizable name and it’s known that most students are superior, then adcoms should be plenty forgiving.

Good schools such as yours usually have something like Naviance that’ll help you see where students from your school with your GPA and scores end up. Check that out if you guys have it: it’ll be infinitely better than my anonymous comment here on CC.

We dont have naviance :(

Why didn’t you discuss this with your GC? No one here knows. You have put your applications in now sit tight, like everyone else. Or visit the chances forum to play guessing games.

@brownparent well i did talk to my GC and she encouraged me to apply to the schools that i did. She didnt really tell me how rank effects applicants from our school since our school doesn’t officially rank.

I’m trying to say that it doesn’t matter how it affects anything now. You have your applications in and all you can do is await your fate and then make your decisions. You can’t use that info to strategize about where to apply for best chances and all that any longer for this admissions cycle. It sounds like your GC took that into consideration already, so ease up. Try to think of other things or learn something new and not obsess. And have some fun now that it is the end of HS for you. Good luck with all, we will look forward to see where you end up.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. It’s even tougher because we have a mixed weighted and unweighted GPA. Honors classes receive a 5.0 scale in the class. We had a tri-valorvictorian this year had because all 3 people had GPAs to the same .001 (like… all of them had like, 4.650 or something crazy like that). And there’s roughly 200 people in my grade, making it harder to get into a percentage.

Take heart because lots of colleges recalculate all gpa to uw 4.0 scale.
