I've been hearing that its important my 2 letters(recommended in my school to have 2) be from my MAIN CORE TEACHERS. now that isn't an issue, but i feel that my AP Psychology teacher could right the best rec letter for me and i would like to ask her as one of them, but it is not a main course. Would this be a detriment to my application if i did so? Thanks for the help

Unless a college specifies which disciplines the teachers should be in, they should be from teachers in academic subjects, which includes Psychology, but not things like health, PE, music, etc.

Psychology very much counts as an academic subject. I would say it counts as a humanities/social science course and therefore can be used to fulfill one of those letters.

Remember that a core course is not one that is required of all students, but it can be an elective in one of the core subjects. For example, even though most schools don’t require a creative writing class, since it is an English credit, it can still count as an English class.

I would say that true electives that fall outside the academic fields would not count as Core–things like woodshop or visual and performing arts.

I will disagree with entomom on one point though, depending on what kind of health is being taught, it may qualify as a core class, especially if it’s health science related. Personal health does not count, but classes that may be offered through the health “department” such as nutrition, exercise physiology, etc do in fact count and may be very beneficial if you are looking to major in a health science field.
