I got my letter in the mail today and received the Academic Achievement Award ($15000 per year), but no honors.

However, I was wondering. If my grades for this semester (they weren't factored in the admissions decision) are quite a bit better than my junior year and I have added some more ECs that Tulane doesn't know about, can I send those in and ask to be considered for a higher scholarship as well as the Honors program? I don't want Tulane to think I don't appreciate the offer, it's just that my parents think if they are going to pay a ton of money it might as well be to a 'better' school (their words, not mine, I think Tulane is great but they rely way too much on USNWR rankings). So, if I got honors and a higher scholarship they would probably be more inclined to choose Tulane.

Realistically, the Honors Program is probably not in the cards. It seems impossible you vould raise your GPA that much, and your test scores won’t change. However, it certainly is possible you can get the next higher scholarship ($20,000) by getting straight A’s this semester. Be aware also that you can earn your way into the Honors program by making a 3.6 GPA at Tulane. Finally, if it helps at all, tell your parents that if it were based solely on academic criteria like grades and SAT scores, Tulane would rank around 30th. The factors dragging Tulane down right now are past retention/graduation rates and peer review, both severely Katrina affected. The retention and graduation rates now are right up there with some of the highly rated schools, but it takes a few years for that to be reflected in the rankings.

That’s too bad, I had hoped that I would get to live in Butler. But that’s alright, I’ll appeal and hope for the Founders scholarship and if I go to Tulane I’ll try and get that 3.6. I’ll tell my parents about the retention thing, that’s a great point. Thanks!

You have a pretty good chance of living in butler if you enroll at tulane and rank it as your #1 choice in your housing preferences (get them in the earlier the better once HRL sends out the forms). Honors students are given first preference, but with 8 floors of rooms there are a good deal of spots for non-honors students as well.

That’s true, TulaneGreg. Another way to enhance one’s chances is to find a roommate on Facebook or Roommate Click that is in the Honors Program and wants Butler.

Hello, I have the same question. I too received the 15 grand award and would like to appeal for more, hopefully the 20K. Any idea how/when to do this? thanks

My take on it is to send them your first semester grades and your mid-term grades (assuming they help your case of course) right around April 1 and ask them if they can bump you up. Nothing to lose, as I always say about this situation.
