i'm a north indian who's never been to america so i don't exactly get the whole greek life thing (except for reese witherspoon in legally blonde). i also don't know if it'll be a match for me, but i just want to inquire anyway. i need to understand one thing. it seems that there is a segregation in UVA's greek life - ISC for caucasians (from what i seem to gather from the official sites) and Multicutural Greek Council for asians (which are actually only chinese. americans don't seem to realize that india, the philippines, thailand etc are in asia as well), latinos and afro-americans.

so my question is, can i join one of the sororities that seem to be predominantly 'white'?

i know i have a lot of time anyway, but still, i want to know.

i’ve been thinking about whether i want to join as well…and i realize that there’s no harm in rushing. you may find out that it isn’t for you, in which case you can easily drop out. or, you could realize that it’s something you really enjoy and want to be a part of. i’m sure you’ll get a feel for the ones you’d want to join (if at all) once you get there, regardless of which council they are in.

Melli is an asian in a so-called “white” sorority. But I don’t think a single sorority is all-white, or even close. Most are so mixed, I sometimes wonder how every single girl has something in common =P

As with anywhere, some sororities and fraternities have more or less diversity, some are predominantly white, some are predominantly mixed races, but I can’t think of a single one that has only white people. There are many races represented in my IFC fraternity. Go out to rush in the spring, visit all the houses, and see if greek life is something you’d like.

Vesch, the traditionally asian sororities realize that Asian is not constricted to East Asian; South Asians, Causasians, anyone is allowed to rush, pledge and become a sister. From personal experience, I can say that the majority of sisters are NOT chinese. Because most of the sisters are of East Asian descent, the stigma remains that AKDPhi and Sigma are only for East Asians. However, at the GWU chapter of Sigma, there are sisters that are white, indian, etc. VT also has indian sisters. So, I don’t think you should write them off; we Americans know what “Asian” means. I will warn you that the process for becoming a sister is almost opposite of traditional rush; For traditional sororities, rushing is easier than pledging. For the sororities on the MGC, pledging is much, much harder.

I’m Indian and I rushed. I chose not to pledge because I do so much other random stuff around grounds and I wouldn’t be able to meet the time commitment. (Keep that in mind: being in a sorority IS a time commitment.) There was a good number of girls that rushed that were not caucasian. I know at least 4 Indian girls in ISC sororities, and they love it. Knowing me, I would have loved being in a sorority but unfortunately, there’s only 24 hours in a day. Rushing is also a great way to meet a LOT of people and network. I would definitely recommend doing it, even if you don’t pledge.

Also keep in mind that sororities do cost a good amount of money; from what I’ve heard, plan at least $1000 or so for each semester.
