Question about specific colleges (like School of Architecture) at universities...

Hey Guys,

One of my friends moved to the US about 2 years ago and is now a permanent resident. English is her second language.

She looking to apply to the University of Oregon and would like major in Architecture. The UO has a specific "college" for architecture that requires an additional application with some higher requirements than the standard UO application.

UO Department of Architecture - Undergraduate Applicant Categories

She is a little below the requirements for the TOEFL and SAT requirements, but she would still like to make an attempt to try.

If my friend lists "architecture" as her intended major on the normal UO college application, and gets denied entrance into the College of Architecture, will they let her know that she can still attend the University if she meets requirements?

Maybe this will make it more clear: Let's say she completes the standard application and lists "architecture" as her intended major, then also completes the School of Architecture application. Then, let's say she gets denied entrance into the School of Architecture. Since she had "architecture" listed as her major on the regular app, will this prevent her from being admitted to the normal college, or will they let her know that she can certainly enter the college with a different major or undeclared?

Thanks guys.

I don’t think colleges usually hold you to the major you list on your app. If so, there would be a lot of unhappy people, considering how few people know what they want to do before they get to college

Ah! Thanks for your reply.

This is what I was thinking, too.

So, in your opinion, she would be safe if she put down architecture as her major on the normal app, applied for the School of Arch. through their app…found out she couldn’t get into the School of Arch…but she would still be able to attend the UO?

Thanks!!

Oh, and let’s see…one other question.

Let’s say she doesn’t get into the School of Architecture as an incoming freshman. Could she enter the UO as an undeclared, take the gen. ed. classes and possibly reapply for the SoA as a sophomore? Hmmm…maybe she could outline a schedule with the adviser in order to prepare for the following year. This way she could demonstrate her academic ability in college..

If possible, how far would this put her behind? I mean, obviously architecture majors have to take gen. ed classes like everybody else so in that sense, she would be taking some of the same classes?

What do you think? Suggestions?

Bump for post #4. Thanks.

“If you would like to speak with an admission counselor about factors considered in the application review process or options such as transfer student admission, call (800) BE-A-DUCK.”

I would have your “friend” call or email UO and ask them if candidates that are rejected from the architecture school can still be considered for regular admissions. They would probably say yes, but it’s better safe than sorry!

If they say no, I think that it would be wise for her to apply to UO and take general education requirements for a year/raise scores and then attempt to apply as a transfer (information is on the page you linked to earlier).

has some PDFS that show the requirements and samples of how a typical architecture undergrad might fulfill them.
