I know the majority of students are from Maryland but how it it really to be from another state? Is it harder to make friends, et cetera?

Scoutmom, my d will be attending in September - from out of state. Far out of state, in our case, so I hope someone with direct experience will answer your question. I do know that there is an out-of-state club on campus, so there is a social club that fosters getting the OOS students together.

With our very limited experience to date, I am a little worried about the in-state focus. For example, there is a New Students Day in July - a one-day event where students tour dorms, choose their seminar topic, etc. In theory, it sounds like a great idea. Since each day is limited to 100 in-coming students, it provides an opportunity for them to get their feet wet and meet some peers before we have to drop them off and say good-bye.

However, it is a long, expensive one-day trip for those of us far away, and the school is not providing any kind of shuttle service from the airport - which means a parent has to come along. Or, choose not to attend and miss the direct contact between fellow students and your assigned adviser.

I live in CT but the ride isn’t bad. If your kid has a license she can do what i will probably be doing and drive herself. College is all about independence so let her take the initiative and take care of herself because in a few months she will be on her own. This is especially true for those of us who are so far from home that we will probably only be able to make the trip home on rare occasions. As for how welcoming it is on campus for out of staters, i too am interest in someone’s experiences because i will be in the same boat this coming year.

ChiSquare: “and the school is not providing any kind of shuttle service from the airport”

Ignorance on the part of the school IMHO. How difficult would it be to provide this? Not too.

I agree. I appealed to have them at least consider having the OOS students come on one particular day (kids can pick one of 5 days to do this new student thing) & provide a shuttle from the airport - I’m sure parents would be willing to pay for the service. Given the remote location, there appears to really be no other option for distant students than having a parent come along to rent a car.

Let’s hope the logistical pains will be worth it!
