So heres the situation i just got a 1 day suspension which i think is grossly overaggerated. During the apus test on the green booklet thats not sent to the college board for grading and is collected by the teachers i wrote at the bottom of the packet "F*** Truman" my teachers favorite president because i dont agree with her political biased crap she give us in class. Anyways teacher took this as a "direct threat" and the administrator gave me a 1 day suspension. So what can i do im filing an apeal but can they do this? The school doesnt administer the test the college board does and it was held at a church. Plus dont i have freedom of political expression. My administrators are charging me under vulgar langauge and conduct. School doesnt report it and i dont plan on it so im not that worried but still... any ideas? also im currently a junior applying in the fall.

I would consider consulting with a lawyer who has experience in free speech issues. You were not on school grounds, and it was not a school-sponsored activity. You should have free speech rights, IMHO.

On the other hand, know that litigating against your school can make people mad at you, and the school's support can help to get you into a good college. Maybe you should also pay for a college consultant. Wow, I guess this is getting kind of expensive.

If you don't mind me saying so, wouldn't it have been easier just to have refrained from your expletive against Truman? You could have written a paper criticizing him, a polite yet pithy one, and distributed it at school. Maybe you don't want to do that, but what I am really saying is that in the future you can probably find better ways to exercise your free speech (ways which will not get you in trouble).

Free speech and schools...a tricky issue. Unless you are a teacher, of course. Then you are free to, say, spend all of English Lit class bashing George Bush instead of discussing novels.

I guess my heart tells me that you are being bullied. Young people should be held accountable by schools for profanity, but where and how it happened doesn't seem to be that type of situation.

I love the "direct threat" garbage. Please!

You also should peruse articles written by adcoms on CC about college admissions after being suspended, and find posts by momofwildchild.

Also, you should reaximine Truman, his Fair Deal, and his civil rights progressivism.

Super-underrated president.
