I also think that if English is not your first language, and you fail the FEE, they will suggest an ESL class (21F.322) as your CI-HW class rather than suggesting a writing class (21L.000J).

The ESL class is one option for fulfilling the CI-HW requirement (required if you fail the FEE). The other option is the writing class.

I assume the people who fail the FEE and are ESL speakers are directed to take 21F.322, while people who fail the FEE and speak English as their first language are directed to take 21L.000J. I think that is the reason they're asking for your language status.

Yeah, if you fail the FEE you are required to take a CI-HW class first term. After that it doesn't matter.

Handy flow chart
Pass FEE --> Take a HASS of your choice (probably a good idea to take a HASS-D or a CI, but do whatever gets you psyched)
Fail FEE --> Take 21L.000J (if English is first language) or 21F.322 (if English is not first language)

Ugh, stupid class search! I searched for all the CI-HW courses scheduled for the fall and only came up with 21F.322 and 21L.000J/21W.734J. Not sure why the other classes didn't show up.

Last year 58% of freshmen passed the FEE; the year before that, 72% passed (source). Apparently last year more students didn't take the FEE because they'd gotten a 5 on AP Lit or Lang.
