Question about the FEE Bio Information Part

Hi!

At FEE website, I have seen the question below and I couldn't understand the purpose of it.

Do you have an idea about it?

**Which of the following best describes you (choose only one answer)?

English is my first (native) language.

English is NOT my first language, but I speak and write English as fluently as I speak and write my first language.

English is not my first language, and I do NOT speak and write English as fluently as I speak and write my first language.**

Selects for the exam you will be taking.

I also think that if English is not your first language, and you fail the FEE, they will suggest an ESL class (21F.322) as your CI-HW class rather than suggesting a writing class (21L.000J).

I don't think that the exam changes according to our selection.

Does the assesment depend on whether I speak and write English as fluently as I speak and write my first language?

And Mollie, what is the difference between ESL and CI-HW?

The ESL class is one option for fulfilling the CI-HW requirement (required if you fail the FEE). The other option is the writing class.

I assume the people who fail the FEE and are ESL speakers are directed to take 21F.322, while people who fail the FEE and speak English as their first language are directed to take 21L.000J. I think that is the reason they're asking for your language status.

when you say "directed to" is that a suggestion by MIT or are the course selections actually limited by how well (or poorly) you do on the FEE?

If you don't pass the FEE they limit the class options to CI-HW classes (which are very few classes).

Yeah, if you fail the FEE you are required to take a CI-HW class first term. After that it doesn't matter.

Handy flow chart
Pass FEE --> Take a HASS of your choice (probably a good idea to take a HASS-D or a CI, but do whatever gets you psyched)
Fail FEE --> Take 21L.000J (if English is first language) or 21F.322 (if English is not first language)

21W.730, 21W.731, and 21W.732 are also CI-HW classes you can take to fulfill the writing requirement.

hm. i wonder how easy it is to pass the FEE... 70/30?

Ugh, stupid class search! I searched for all the CI-HW courses scheduled for the fall and only came up with 21F.322 and 21L.000J/21W.734J. Not sure why the other classes didn't show up.

Last year 58% of freshmen passed the FEE; the year before that, 72% passed (source). Apparently last year more students didn't take the FEE because they'd gotten a 5 on AP Lit or Lang.
