Question about the housing form

what does this mean?

Are you interested in a community where the programming will be focused on the arts?

What sort of arts, will I get stuck with a person who never ceases to play his instrument?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think they are referring to performing arts such as musical theater and chorus and band, etc. I don't think it means you will be stuck with someone like that, though. I think it's just like how they house the sports players in one dorm.

I don't think we had that option when I filled out the forms, but in each dorm/RA group there's all sorts of 'programming' that's designed to bring everyone together and do something fun. Part of your tuition money goes for this sort of programming. The only thing I can think of as for arts programming that the majority of the things you'll do as a group are centered around getting performers to come visit or actually going out as a group to see a show on or off campus. I could be way off base, b/c I didn't remember anything about a community on arts programming, but that's my guess.

Yeah, I don't remember that question from last year either....we sometimes had acapella groups perform, etc. They might be piloting a sort of "shared interest" housing or something, though it sounds a bit weird for a first year. And unless a musician is on crack or something, they won't practice in their rooms (i play the trumpet and i always went to the practice rooms - no way I feel like entertaining the whole floor). Sometimes you'll hear guitar wafting down the hallways, but that's usually always pleasant to listen to.

This is what I found on the Duke Site:

Performing arts - This community will be shaped based on demand. As this is a pilot year, there is the possibility that students who did not indicate an interest in this community may be placed in it.

I guess the people living in that residence hall will probably be doing something in the performing arts field...they might be incharge of dramas,musicals..etc etc..
