Question about the music scene

I am considering upon attending Merced in Fall of 2008. While scurrying around the forum, there was much mention about the lack of college experience...which slightly worried me, but I'll try to make the best of it.

As for that, I was curious about the music around Merced (similar to how Davis' auditorium is frequented by touring bands such as The Strokes and Muse and others). So, tell me, are there any good bands around that drop by Merced? Tours? Shows? Where are concerts usually held? What type of music do the students here listen to mostly (indie, hiphop, ??).

I believe I read in someone's post last year that music at Merced is DEAD. As you may know, Merced is pretty much in the middle of nowhere (which is a plus for some). This is actually one of the reasons why I didn't even apply to Merced, because I really like music and hearing that music was not a part of the campus culture bothered me.

Ah, I see. Yeah, that really does worry me since I am a music person myself...I play instruments and enjoy being in an atmosphere influenced not only by academics, but the fine arts as well. It's part of what keeps me going and influences me.

Music aside though, I'm torn between going to Merced or a CCC. I appealed to Davis and Berkeley only to find out I was rejected by both this morning (I think it probably has to do with the UCs encouraging more students to attend either Riverside or Merced).

Financially, in comparison to Merced, CCC is preferable..as well as being very close to home and being in priority to other UCs once transferring. And plus I might be more comfortable with that, yet I would also like to experience going to a UC campus this year.

However with Merced, it's a UC. The academics, as far as what I've been reading in the forums, seems to be very close-knit and well. The dorms look pleasant, and perhaps twenty-some years from now, when it will possibly become not as down-graded as it is at the moment..I will proudly claim that I attended UC Merced (that is if I do this year).

Do you have any other options?

You can read around the Merced forums and notice some of the past Merced students said that although they enjoyed their experience at Merced, they would have just went to a CC and saved the money if they could do it over again. In a nutshell, some people who have attended Merced think that they did not get their $23k worth.

I am sure others feel differently on this topic so it is really up to you. It definitely looks nice from the pictures that I have seen, but will you enjoy your experience. Only you will know that answer.

To tinyhawks:
Make sure you read most of the other threads in the UCM forum. Others and I have already discussed the music scene at UCM. The music scene is dead at UCM but if people who enjoy music, like your self and I, don't attend this University of California then UCM will NEVER be a music school and the school will always be DEAD.
Do you think when UCLA and UCB were first established those schools had a music scene? I doubt it. Students that are inspired by and love music had to attend those school. They had to promote and ensconce music for themselves as well as the school. Maybe that's what you should do for UCM.

Attend a CCC instead of UCM?<-----------just read the other forums b/c they create a clear distinction between the two.

I suggest you read all the post. Did you attend Bobcat day at UCM?

Hehe Leviathan. I like your positive attitude about Merced, but I am thinking it is going to be a while until Merced has a solid music scene :)

I try to make techno. Let's get something started.

MySpace.com - Leonardo Damacy! - I live in, California - Emotronic / Electronica - www.myspace.com/papermacheplane

Cali Trumpet: My other options consist of UC Riverside. I was rejected from every UC I applied to (UCLA, Berkeley, Irvine and Davis). I was also accepted to San Francisco State University, but I was rather perturbed by the campus and location.

Fusionall: Hehe, Leonardo Damacy reminds me of Katamari. :) Sounds somewhat like a softer Crystal Castles meets SebastiAn and I like! I will have to add you.

Leviathan: No, I didn't attend Bobcat day...I was one of the folks who received the letter well past Bobcat day. I really do appreciate your encouragement for UCM, but it disheartens me that I will eventually have to choose a CCC instead due to financial reasons and the fact that I'm not sure if I want to move out of my home (I'm rather close to my family and slightly anxious when separated from them, vise versa). In addition, it would be a better transition for me due to the pace and having a job...I've never familiarized with the city of Merced, and hardly know much about it aside from the university. As far as I've read up on the forums, there doesn't seem to be much going on a miles radius. If I did have the money, as well as the interest in the area, I would attend. I have until Thursday if I want to change my mind.... :)

lol music. Oh man, you guys have no idea. The reason music is dead on campus is because there is NO WHERE for anyone to play there sax, trumpet, etc. As a result, not only is the music sence dead on campus, you might not even hear a single note your whole time here.

I am attending in the fall, i actively play the guitar and i will be playing often... just because the music seen is dead on campus doesn't mean that us music lovers cannot get together and play...there are others out there that feel the same as us

To tinyhawks:
I wish you could come to UCM. Did you apply for financial aid?

To fusionall:
I love techno! I rave! Your music is nice dude. I think I'm going to make a video to it. lol oh yea I dance.

To all:
It looks like UCM this fall 2008 is going to be fun because you guys make/play music and ppl like me, who dance, might also go to UCM. Just liek Dlnitsud said, "just because the music seen is dead on campus doesn't mean that us music lovers cannot get together and play...there are others out there that feel the same as us!"
I love to dance! I don't have any videos of me dancing to techno but I'm going to record myself to day(hopefully, it depends on the homework load). I guess I'll show you guys my videos...

Don't watch the ones that say Turf Hoodz because thats my old group. But all the other ones are just me. Rate/comment the vidz that'd be helpful.

I think this fall we're going to have lots of FUN! =D

To tinyhawks: Legit bro. I had to stop recently because of the looming task of studying for AP Exams but hopefully I can get some new material in during the summer.

To Leviathan08: Legit bro. I'm trying to get this form of electronic music more recognition in my area. It's pretty popular in Europe. It's called Chiptune. It's basically techno or trance lines but with 8bit sounds from classic video games. Check out Henry Homesweet! on myspace. He's an innovator in Chiptune and was my inspiration for getting into it. Traditionally you're supposed to use Gameboys but I don't have one so I use my midi controller. :]

Anyone know how to play drums or guitar? I want to try to start something like PlayRadioPlay! Hm, at least something to break the boredom that is sure to come. <3

"Hm, at least something to break the boredom that is sure to come. <3"
SURE TO COME!???????? You sure are optimistic.

LOL, TY.

I'm just joking. "College is what you make it," right?

...I wonder how many times I've heard that by now. :]

lol SAME HERE!

"College is what you make it" Ah yes, I remember saying that in a previous thread. It really is, although I have to admit premed4life had a pretty good rebuttal to that quote lol. Best of luck to you all at UCM!

At UCM we have a Pep Band and at the local Community college theres an orchestra, if you're interested in playing music. As was mentioned above, the more people that come, the more likely it is that we can integrate more talented musicians into our music scene.
A more pertinent question, however, is, not which college has a better msuic scene (unless you plan on majoring in music?), but also what other things the college has to offer, like do they have a strong department for the major you are considering.
When UCM students say "I didn't get my 23 ks worth" i would think its because Undeclared students may benefit more from a Community College's quarter system, which allows them to experiment more with classes.

I'm an avid guitarist also, and if there isn't one already, I think I'd like to go and start a guitar club of some sort, or just a club where we can all hold jam sessions to start the music scene ourselves. The one thing that I've been hoping to do since I applied for this school is to find a bunch of people who can play guitar so that we could all come together and create magic.
