So, I'm back - once again, with a relatively pointless thread but you all seem like nice people and I enjoy getting input and insight from you guys (:

This thread is basically what the discussion title states.
Music is really important to me, as a matter of fact if I had even the smallest ounce of talent I would probably would have dropped out of school to pursue music a long time ago.

Sadly the only talent I have is that I'm not tone deaf and that I am a decent-ish lyricist.

Anyway, that being said, is there a particular school that itself has or is surrounded by an area with a strong music scene/community?

Aside from school I want to do what I can to immerse myself in music, though as an inexperienced person I'd probably be too shy to go for it I'd really like to have the option. I want to go to live shows for both bigger artists but also for up and coming artists.

I also really want to get voice lessons, do you guys think the music departments do this type of thing for students? I know that UC Davis and UCSC both offer music lessons (for a fee, obviously).

Your best shot at that is going to be in more urban areas than UCSC. Obviously, campuses in the LA and SD area as well as Berkeley have vibrant scenes in the surrounding community.

Sacramento (not far from Davis) has a pretty hopping live music scene. Davis itself to a lesser extent.

Since UCLA, UC Berkeley, and UCSD lie in very urban areas, a lot of musical talent is going to come around in those areas. UCI could potentially have a great music scene as well since it’s smack in the middle of OC.

I did apply to UCLA and Cal so I will do what I can to further look into what those schools offer non-music majors in terms of involvement (mostly lessons)… and I’ve known that UCLA and Cal have good inner and surrounding opportunities to be involved in music. Hopefully I can get over the fear of looking like the inexperienced fool I am and can go and just become involved somehow.

Sadly, I didn’t apply to UCI or UCSD, so I guess that they are out of the mix as far as this is concerned (I also didn’t apply to UCR or UCM).
