Question about the Pell Grant

I've received my financial aid offers from four different schools. However, only two of my schools gave me the Pell Grant that I was expected to get, while the other two didn't give me Pell Grants at all.

Is there a reason for this?

You have to talk to the financial aid officers directly about that. It could be good news, depending on the school–some let Pell kids get the grant on top of the aid they get from the school, or it could be an oversight or mistake. Pretty wide variance for reasons.

Contact the schools. The Pell grant is an entitlement grant, meaning that if you are eligible you should receive it. Some schools reduce their grant money in the amount of the Pell, but I think if you are entitled to it, you are supposed to get it.

Okay thanks. I found it weird because the school that didn’t give me the Pell Grant (Northeastern U.) has a grant called the Northeastern Grant, but didn’t saying anything about “if you receive this grant, you will not longer be eligible to receive the Pell Grant.”

I’ll look into it, as you suggested. Thank you again.

@Thumper - thank you as well. i’ll be sure to contact them.

You get Pell regardless.

A school cannot decide NOT to give you Pell if you qualify.

Did any of the schools verify you … did you give tax returns to any? If so, it is possible that the schools that did not give you Pell adjusted some elements on your FAFSA that may have been incorrectly reported, resulting in an EFC too high for Pell.

Were you verified at any of the schools?

What do you mean “did they verify me”? None of the schools asked for my tax returns, yet one school still gave me the Pell Grant.

I’m a little confused with this verification detail. After Northeastern sent me my financial aid letter, they told me I was selected for verification and that I would have to wait later for an email for instructions for verification.

Then you were selected for verification by Northeastern. Kelsmom will have to weigh in here…but sometimes the awarding of the Pell is held up until the school verifies that you actually ARE entitled to it. When you get the email instructions…send the info ASAP to Northeastern. Check your email every day…more than once for the email instructions to follow. You want to get this done ASAP.

Did you receive the FULL Pell? Was your EFC per FAFSA $0? If so, you should have received the Pell from ALL of your schools, unless there was an error on your FAFSA. You might want to check the FAFSA to see if any changes were made by any of your colleges…although I think you would have gotten an email saying changes were made…if they had been.

You need to talk to the individual schools. Too many things it can be. Guessing is a waste of time since they can tell you right off.

Verification occurs when you are selected for a request for more information. it varies from school to school. We were selected even though my son just wanted a subsidized loan. Had to send copies, but signed, of our tax returns, a note saying that son did not file a return due to insufficient income and no withholdings, Had to send an answered supplemental questionaire that asked questions already addressed. If NE said you were selected for verification and you have not gone through the process and provided what they want for it yet, that would be a reason why they did mention the PELL from them.

Did you happen to make any changes after you sent your first FAFSA?
