This is kind of a broad question, but here goes. I've read that admission to Tisch is 50-50 portfolio/grades. Question is, if your grades are a little lower than the NYU acceptance rate, would having a stellar portfolio make up for it? I'm talking Clive davis recorded music in particular.

Any insight into this from people accepted to Tisch programs would be cool! Thanks!

I don’t think it’s a question of “making up for it.” If NYU deems you not acceptable academically, then it likely won’t matter how good your portfolio is. Remember, that it’s not just your grades, but your course selection and rigor, your placement within the context of your school, that matter regarding your transcript. Plus standardized scores.

If you think that your transcript will be way below NYU standards, then it will be tough, no matter your portfolio. But, if you’re on the low side, but in the ballpark, then go for it.

My understanding of how it works is this (based on what I’ve read on Drama forums): academic and artistic reviews take place separately. Then, the applicants who “pass” both are then considered to see who, from this group, will be offered admission to Tisch. So, it stands to reason that if you pass both, then that is where your portfolio might outweigh someone with a better transcript but weaker (yet passable) artistic review, but on the other hand, if there are plenty of people with outstanding artistic reviews and better academic credentials, then that’s where you might not make it.
