What happens if you apply for a major that doesn't require prerequisites, get in, and then simply start taking courses in the major you needed the prerequisites to get in for? Will they still not let you change majors after you've completed all or near all of the courses?

My understanding is that no, you can’t do this. Most of the majors without significant prereqs aren’t impacted, so they’re much easier to get into. But you can’t then decide you want to do Biology or BizEcon, which have science/math prereqs, once you get to UCLA. That’s jumping through loopholes, and I’m pretty sure that’s not allowed. Perhaps you could try to double major if there are enough spots in the classes you need…but I don’t think you can outright switch

The only problem with double majoring is you might not be able to graduate on time. Does UCLA generally let you stay an extra year?

not sure, gambon111, but I believe you can stay as long as you don’t exceed the maximum unit limit. Check with the school
