Hi!
I am considering transferring from CSUF to a CC to a UC. I am taking 14 units at CSUF and I’m wondering if those units transfer to the CC and then are considered transferable to a UC. I’m really confused about transferable units. Do those units not count or do only some of them count?
Here are my classes if it helps:
-A human communications class (HCOM 100)
-Calculus 1 (MATH 150A)
-An american studies class that is considered a GE (AMST 201)
-An engineering lab (EGCE 206)
-And chemistry for engineers (CHEM 123)
Oh and also, assist.org doesn’t really help for CSU and UC, so I’m really confused haha
The UC would evaluate your transferred CSUF courses. Since that combination is not listed on ASSIST, you would have to wait until you transfer to find out what they may count as.
It is entirely possible that a course may be considered transferable and give credit units, but not be equivalent to anything at the new school, so you may get just the credit units but not subject credit for anything (e.g. the engineering lab may not match up to anything at the new school).
So how would I go about when I’m at the CC? Would I have to take 60 units or do the 14 units overlap?
There is no 100% way to know and the best estimate would be through a UC counselor. Due note at each UC has a chance of evaluating each course differently so even among the different UCs there probably won’t be a consensus answer.
It’s logical to assume that your American Studies and Comm courses will net you 3 units each. The rest can really vary with Calculus I converting from 3-5 units, your Engineering Chemistry anywhere from 0-4 units and your Engineering Lab will net 0-2 units.
If I were in your shoes, I’d assume that, out of those classes, I have 9 transferable units to be safe and I’d plan to take the additional 51 CC units to meet the minimum transfer requirements.
Edit: If I remember correctly, your an Engineering hopeful so I’d be more concerned about the “high-unit” label if you receive max credits for all the courses and take additional courses at a CSU.
