Question about transferring to UCI

Hi,

I recently went to see my counselor about my IGETC, TAG, and my major Information & Computer Science.

He told me that I need to take: 9 classes on top of IGETC in order to transfer.

UC Irvine
Information and Computer Science
CS/IS 135 and 139, 165 and 166 and 170, (195 Subject credit only)
MATH 103 and 104, 107
CS/IS 125

However, on assist.org it says I need:

1) one year of
discrete mathematics if available; if not, first year calculus (Calculus I)

2)completion of one year of UC-transferable computer science courses including at least one course involving the concepts of object-oriented programming (e.g. Java) or functional programming (e.g. in Scheme). (So I assume Java and C++.)

Also, UCI's official transfer site says:

Complete one year of approved calculus

Complete one year of transferable computer science courses involving concepts such as those found in Java, Scheme, C++ or other object-oriented or high-level programming

So my question is, what pathway is the correct one. If I take my counselors word, I'll be at CC for another year (3 years) and have more than 70+ units while Assist.org and UCI's official site state the bare minimum needed to transfer as an I&CS major, therefore, I'll be able to transfer by Fall 2011 if that's the case. Thank you for your time.

So if you want to apply for a “TAG” to UCI, you MUST complete ALL THE COURSES LISTED ON ASSIST. However, if you apply for regular admission, a good rule of thumb is to only have at most 2 courses missing. Otherwise, you’ll pretty much be auto-rejected.

Priority goes to those who completed all courses, then missing one, then missing two. So the more you complete the better. Having one more pre-req completed (if you have two more to go) IS ALMOST ALWAYS BETTER than having a higher GPA (for Irvine).

So my recommendation for you, if you’ll take it and if you’re REALLY SURE you want to go to UCI as THIS PARTICULAR MAJOR, is to jam as many units as you can as fast as you can while still maintaining a 3.0 (or whatever they want you to maintain).

However, if you’re not comfortable with that, you should stay for 3 years.

If it is ever counselors vs. assist.org, always go with assist. Complete the prereqs on assist and you should be okay as far as lower division prereqs are concerned (you’ll probably be missing a few that you can only take at UCI but that’ll come later).

But yeah for admission purposes, you can apply earlier (only need the year of calc and programming) but to save you from 25K, I would stick it out another year at a CC unless you intend on getting that much in financial aid…
