Question about UCLA financial aid

Hey guys, here is my UCLA financial aid:

under parent contribution why do I have $8,039? I did submit a cal grant and on the cal grant website it says that it's being processed. They have until april 30th I believe to process it. Does that mean that my UCLA aid will change and they will update it? Hopefully my parent contribution will go away?

Thank you

That means your parents are expected to contribute $8,039. You would only get aid to cover up to your financial need ($24K).

The Cal grant works from the bottom up so it would go into your financial need, not your parent’s contribution.

Is this the same EFC your FAFSA is showing? What did the other UCs give you?

So does that mean I wouldn’t get any money in cal grants? I don’t know how to check EFC through FAFSA. UC Davis is giving me the same amount. UC San Diego is giving me 13,269 and says Net Cost :$17339. Then it says my family contribution is $8139. Which is the same as LA. UCI hasn’t told me yet

EDIT: okay so my financial need would increase therefore my family contribution would probably drop right?

Even if you get the Cal grant, your parents are expected to contribute that amount. It means your parents make a certain amount of money per year that allows them to pay $8,039 for your education. Or that’s what the FAFSA is assuming based on their income.

I think you would have to bring this up with the Financial Aid departments if that isn’t the case.

That’s weird because my parents income was not high at all. Yeah I think I will have to talk to them. Thank you for your help!

Yeah, the parent contribution is constant and based on your parent income reported on the FAFSA. And would it really matter what their contribution is? The Cal Grant strictly covers tuition, not the full financial aid amount. I don’t think anything at UCLA other than an athletic scholarship would cover the entire financial need.

Edit: It might come from the total assets section of the FAFSA, weird that it shows that.

Without the Cal grant, your tuition would still be covered with Blue & Gold as long as your parents make under $80k. There’s something the FAFSA is picking up, though, that’s saying your parents can contribute $8k a year for you.
