My daughter is a rising junior who's interested in business. She's attending one of the top magnet schools in our state majoring in business. She's very interested in Wash U. I've read couple of threads on this forum but people are mostly talking about premed. I know that it's #4 ranked business school. Can anyone comment on their experiences. How is the recruitment? Do companies from east coast come to recruit on campus? How easy is it to get internships?

As a current student in Olin who lives on the East Coast and is interested in a finance-related job in NYC after graduation, I can say that Olin has been fantastic in every which way. Being a smaller business school with a dedicated alumni base, Wash U enjoys the benefits of having solid recruiting like the larger undergrad b-school programs, while also having the intimate classroom settings of the smaller programs. Internships at top firms, from Fortune 500 to Consulting to Investing Banking are strong across the nation, but strongest in the Midwest. The Wash U name has grown a lot recently, especially with east-coast firms, so east coast recruiting has really ramped up the last few years. I personally know a lot of seniors who were able to land jobs at top wall street firms (GS, MS, CS, etc.) in NY and Chicago, as well as MANY who got consulting jobs at Bain, McKinsey, and Deloitte. Overall, I was a bit apprehensive like you about the recruiting at Wash U given its location, but I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen and have no regrets about deciding on Wash U.

I was wondering this too. Thanks for the detailed response!

I have one other question. I was recently admitted as a transfer to Olin, and I was curious if there is a lot of recruiting on campus for those wanting to work on the West Coast (either in banking, the business side of tech firms, startups, etc.)?

There definitely is a west-coast presence as well, just not as much as Chicago or NY, mostly due to the student demographics. I know someone who is working in a business/engineering role at Google, as well as a few others who are working at boutique VC/PE firms in the bay area - it can’t get much better than that.

I would also like to point out that I’m really not an expert on this, as I really don’t know that many older Olin students from the West Coast, so it’s harder to compare their successes to others from different regions. But just from my observations alone, I’d say you have a fair shot at West Coast recruiting from Olin. However, if you’re dead-set on the West Coast, then I’d suggest USC or Berkeley as better options.

Thanks, wustlstudent12. Does it make sense to visit the school during the summer? Are there any classes going on at Olin that my daughter can sit in on? I know that student body is a big factor in choosing a school for her, so I don’t know if she’ll get the same feel in the summer. We’re from NY, so don’t know if will have a chance to visit during school year. One of the schools we visited she crossed off her list because she didn’t like the kids even though it was a beautiful campus.

Visiting in the summer isn’t completely worthless - I visited then and it was a large part of the reason I applied ED. That being said, if student body is quite important, then visiting is spring/fall would be far superior.
