Question about Upenn/Columbia...

Has anyone here gotten in with less than a 1900 SAT or a 31 ACT? [Grades can be perfect and EC's amazing]

I'm just wondering how much of a shot I have since I'm not a very good national test taker. My grades are 4.0's in APs and I'm taking the highest level courses offered at my school as well as the President, Vp and/or Sec of various clubs and honor societies.

Thanks so much for you input :)

One of my friends got into penn with a 30 or 31 ACT, to the best of my knowledge. She applied ED though, and had some legacy which might have helped. Her grades and ECs were also really good.

bump. anyone else know anyone?

According to Naviance, the lowest accepted at UPENN and Columbia for my school is 1920/2000 and 1280/1600

Ranked 7th in class with 4.8085 GPA
Currently enrolled at Princeton

African-American

well.. the 1280 i have beat. but i can't compete with a different nationality lol.

African-Americans have the same nationality as you.

What is your exact overall GPA and what are your EC's? When you say AP's, how many do you mean you've taken?

*ethnicity
my GPA is 99/100 or 4.0 unweighted

Hmm...
The EC's look pretty good. From what I gather, Penn likes to see well-roundedness whereas Columbia looks for intense passion in 2-3 activities. Again, this is a subjective statement and the difference might not be huge, but is still a factor to consider. I think that with a bit of tutoring, you could get the SAT up a bit.

For the record, your EC's are far from amazing.

They do show that you have leadership potential, but will not make up for your test scores. I had a 3.98/4.45 GPA for ib diploma, 30 ACT, and better EC's than you. Although this person is a national merit scholar and a recruited athlete, I'm ranked above them and taking harder courses so Columbia is kind of a crapshoot for normal people. It really depends what you want in a college. I wanted an amazing liberal arts college with a strong government department so I chose Claremont McKenna, which is not Ivy League, but I think the quality of education and selectivity is very close and amazing on its own.

this thread really wasn't meant to be about me, it was to be if anyone had seen some lucky people who got in with under a 32 ACT or a 1900 SAT :3

Penn College, vs Wharton, or Engineering or special programs, will be different. 1900 looks like a long shot to me based on the score, which was the OP. Perhaps the college at Penn depending on the score profile.

Lower than 1900 on the SAT? Definitely not.

But my friend did get a 30 on her ACT, sent in those scores, got in. She applied though ED and her father went there so who knows. But you are a junior I am guessing, so you still have plenty of opportunities to raise your scores.

well.. a 30 on the ACT converts to close to a 1980 which is still low.

You dont know until you try. Early decision is an advantage at University of Pennsylvania. There are many who have gotten in early with those scores. It is much harder regular decision when you are competing for almost the same number of spots that were available early decision, only this time you are competing with abut 20,000 applicants.
You have to think about this carefully, because by applying early decision to Penn with stats on the lower side, you would be giving up the chance to apply somewhere else earlier decision that you might have a better chance of getting accepted to. You dont want to find that you did not get into your early decision school, and then your chances of getting accepted regular decision at your match schools become lower when you are one of 20,000, even if you have the stats to be accepted.
If you decide to go forward and apply early to University of Pennsylvania, make sure that you have a list of about 9 other schools you plan to apply to, and make sure you would be happy at every school on your list. This should go for your safety schools as well.

i will be going for financial aid, so i can not take the risk of applying early decision and i dont believe they have early action.

Then you will have nothing to lose by applying.
After the early decision acceptances are in you should try to develop
a repour with your regional admission officer, and continue to write or email him or her, and continue that correspondence until admission decisions are sent out.

if i do get in, and i am not offered a significant financial aid package, i can't go. and since early decision forces me to go to the school, i do not have that option.

I understand. You cannot apply early decision because you need to weigh financial packages. There is no harm in applying to Penn regular decision.
I would suggest applying to at least two early action schools that are not binding like Georgetown or University of Michigan. This way if you get in, you will at least have the comfort of knowing early that you were in somewhere.
What other schools are you planning to apply to?

idk about columbia or upenn but this one girl in my school she got into yale with a 1780

bump.
thought this was an interesting topic.
