Question about who to ask for a recommendation Letter

Hi, I am currently a high school junior and I really want to go to art school. I am planning on asking my math teacher for a recommendation letter. I had him for freshman year and sophomore year. Freshman year was awful and I almost failed his class. But then sophomore year, I worked really hard and got good grades and he really commended me on my improvement. My other choice for a recommendation is from a teacher whose class I have consistently done average to good in. What's better? Big improvement....or consistency?? Please respond soon as I will need to ask one of them tomorrow for a letter.

It sounds like your math teacher would be able to write a nice letter about your improvement…but may not know anything about your art skills…

but neither does my english teacher…when you ask a teacher for a recommendation, they usually ask you to write something about yourself, provide your transcript, xtracurriculars, etc. Plus I already have my art teacher to write about my art skills.

bumpity bump bump

You must ask you teacher who taught you. But they must be the one who should send the recommendation letter

It is always difficult to predict what a teacher will say in a recommendation. I would be especially suspect of a teacher’s perspective of a student who did badly in one of his classes, even though he improved in a follow-up class. A recommendation that reads “he improved from the first year, when he barely passed, to the second year, when he did okay” is not one that glows, no matter what the teacher says. So, play it safe I think, ask your english teacher. Also I would think that in your field of interest english/language/literature/history are of more relevance than math, so the english teacher’s recommendation would carry more weight.
