So I'm a Senior in highschool looking for a good Musical Theatre school and I havent even started applications. Which im panicing because It's January and don't most kids do applications in the fall?

Anyways. I want a good education but I want something that I can take to NYC and be prepared with. But I also want to eventually end up teaching. So my thoughts.

Is it dumb to only look at school in the NYC area (I'm interested in AMDA and going to New School) or branch out all over the east coast?

If you have been on this site since June why haven't you applied to any schools yet?? Sorry to be so direct. You may have a very good reason but it seems a little strange.

I wonder why your late entry into the fray, but do not panic, call the schools you are interested in - many schools have rolling admissions, and/or are flexible in this matter. I do hope you have time to have your audition materials together.

Her senior year, my D decided to apply to and go to a small public college in our state that has a good theatre/MT program. She knew she would get in as our state has a guaranteed acceptance based upon GPA. She is currently preparing for auditions in January and February in NYC where she has been academically accepted already at the schools. My point is ohernjr8, that while most of her friends dropped out of extracurriculars, were extremely stressed, etc. she was able to enjoy her senior year and be in the moment which was important for her. She has been able to take the summer and this past first semester to really hone in on her auditions, essays, etc. It was a much better choice for her. Not everyone has to take the same road. Sounds to me like you may not be ready yet either. Take your time and don't let others' choices pull you onto the highway when you may need just to be on a scenic route at the moment.

Yes, deadlines are coming up or have gone by but you do have some time. You'll just need to be very focused. Get yourself into your guidance office Monday AM and make an appt. and keep it. Over the weekend research school admission deadlines and look at what is realistic at this point. You can always transfer. It isn't the end of the world. And look at the advice posted here on schools that may not be in the heart of NYC but are good. But you can't continue to delay (trying to be kind but direct...). Let us know how it goes.

Ive decided that I'm applying to University of West Florida, Columbia College, and AMDA. Small list i know. Whats the lowest ACT score Columbia will take.

If you are applying this year but don't want to attend until fall of 2009, you would have to get deferred admissions status. Before bothering to apply to these schools, you would need to find out with each one if you can be admitted in this year's cycle and then defer your entrance for a year. If not, then it makes sense to wait and apply next year (let alone you will have more time to create a college list and prepare for auditions, do good applications, etc.). Why do you want to apply now (let alone at this late date in a rush) if you plan to defer entrance for a year? What advantage do you see in that? Is there a reason that since you are taking a gap year, that you don't wait and apply next fall for fall of 2009?

Also, asking questions on a message board such as "what is the lowest ACT score Columbia will take?" is not the best place to find out such information. You should be contacting schools directly. Further, MOST schools do not provide a "lowest score we will take". For most schools, you can obtain the mid ACT or SAT score range of accepted students.

However, if you had looked into Columbia College (I assume you mean the one in IL), you would see that standardized test scores are not considered for admission. Further, they accept 95% of those who apply and so just about any applicant will be admitted. Research your schools thoroughly and directly.
