Hi, parent new to this forum, folks. My D is a hs senior, will be acting or mt major. My dilemma is we are still looking for some rather small colleges in the Northeast with good theatre programs. D is artistically talented but academics are so-so. Has a math disability, ranges low to mid 20's in ACT's. Would probably do better in a more performance-based program with a few liberal arts classes. Any suggestions? Please and thank you!!!!

Hi mimigrace, the first one that comes to mind is Boston Conservatory. Acceptance is based mainly on audition and very little on academics. It is however an expensive school with a history of not offering much financial aid.

You might also look at University of the Arts in Philly. I’m sure there are also other Northeast schools that would fit your criteria and perhaps others will chime in with more ideas.

I know you say Northeast, but Roosevelt/CCPA in downtown Chicago has less stringent academic requirements and the students only take one gen ed course per semester. You might want to check it out. They have a BFA acting, BFA MT voice and BFA MT dance degree programs.

Point Park is almost all audition based and the academic requirements here arent very stringent.

These schools are all in Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states, are less than 10,000 students in size, have median estimated SAT/ACT below 1,200 or are known to admit based largely on audition, and have MT programs that I have seen at least one positive post on (smile):

This list is not meant to be exhaustive nor completely inclusive.

Shenandoah Conservatory is an hour drive from Washington, DC. Cute little campus next to historic Winchester, VA.

further south than your geographic location, but you may also want to look at Christopher Newport, Emory and Henry, and Coastal Carolina

My daughter is in the BFA MT program at Montclair in NJ, 12 miles from Manhattan. She loves it. The campus is medium-large and 5-6 thousand students live on campus. Gorgeous dorms. The program is conservatory style and the BFA kids are exempt from the math and science requirements. They have both BFA Acting and BFA MT. About half the cost of Boston Conservatory.

mimigrace, I second those who have mentioned Point Park. Great program, plus from what I understand, they have a very good academic support program for kids with a learning disability.

mimigrace— D is at Hartt (U of Hartford)-- it is a conservatory program with very few academic requirements. It has been just amazing for her-- she too wanted the Northeast (wanted to be close to home); which for her meant she hoped to stay in New England. I can’t say enough for Hartt- the intensity of the classes, the concern of the faculty, the performance opportunities, bond between the students, the welcoming, hardworking vibe…

EmsDad has a great list-- I’d add the University of New Hampshire which is a BA by audition starting this year, and the University of Rhode Island, which is a BFA with an MT option, not auditioned and thus a possible safety school.

Thanks, PelkeyAgain! I’ll add those, weren’t on my list.

AustinMT, Thank you! Looking at little outside of NE so this is helpful.

dg22894, Thank you! As all of you can see on this thread, I’m trying to ‘earn’ my PM privileges by replying to each of you separately. ; )

EmsDad, Thank you so much! This is nice, more comprehensive list than I’ve got, a few I’ve had on my own list, a few newer ones, so very helpful. Wonderful!

classical bk, Thank you and good to know!

KatMT, Thank you. I’ve heard good things about Emory and Henry…may look into that one!

Calliene, Thank you. Montclair wasn’t on my radar, but I will check it out now!

CollegeSearchDad,
Thank you for your input. Point Park is now on my list - good to know they have academic support - so few do!

Gwen Fairfax,
Thanks so much for your input as well. I’m glad to hear you like Hartt. My D has actually just submitted her common app for them and is waiting for an audition confirmation, probably Unifieds in NYC. Any experience with that??

D auditioned at Hartt itself, mimigrace-- she did go to NYC unifieds though for a couple of other schools It wasn’t as pressured a situation as we’d expected, partly because she only did 2 auditions there.
