hi
thank you for clicking on this thread and please keep on reading

I went to a Columbia open house and the lady giving the information session said they look for people who are passoniate about something.
Well the thing is (this may sound wierd but here it goes) i have no idea what i am really passoniate about.
I am involved in may things that i enjoy but i don't want to sound like i do everything because i want my application to look good.

here is the list of "stuff" i am involved in school
Model UN since freshman year to present
FBLA 9th to present
HOSA (Health Occupations of Students of America0 9th grade to present
Volleyball 9th grade to present
Basketball 9th grade to present
Track and Field 9th grade to present
School newspaper 9th grade to present
School literary magazine (editor) 9th grade to present
Youth Advisory Board 9th grade to present
Math Club since 9th grade to present

I am about to be a 11th grade, I love all the activities/sports that i am in but i dont want Columbia to think i dont have a passion

i love politics, science, writing, history, math .....I can go on forever

So, here is my question .....Should i narrow down my activities next year and focus on one or two things??? what does columbia mean my being "passoniate" about something???? Look at my activities and what would you think if you were the admission officer.........

thanks for reading and please tell me you opinion

try not to think of it as limiting; ie dont think "oh crap in order to get into columbia i will need to give up most of the things i love so it looks like im being passionate". Just...develop yourself in those fields that you feel a particular affiliation for. You seem like a very all-around person, but there has GOT to be something in there that you like doing more than the others. focus on it, not to the exclusion of your other interests, but to a greater extent. you are ENTERING 11th grade, so you have time. experiment and see which of those things you really feel a ....here's that word.....passion for.

oh my god... hahha I just realized have so many spelling errors, wow

thanks scifikayaker, i will try to really find what i really like next year but the things that i have listed... i will get leadership positions next year. It may sound insane but i love all the things i do equally...exept for basketball because i only do it because i need to stay in shape and the girls basketball team begged me to join because of my hieght.

but thanks for the advise and i will try to experiment

You know, I don't have a passion for anything either. I did a bunch of things in high school, just like you do now, and for some reason Columbia liked me. But, if I remember those dark days four years ago correctly, I remember focusing on one thing in my admissions essay...I don't remember what, though.
Take scifikayaker's advice, though. You may be passionate about everything, but also try and figure out what would be the most fun to write about, and to read, if it gets to that point. I always found that to be a good rule of thumb. Doing that will make for a good admissions essay but it will be clear from your application you're not a lopsided person. In general, I think Columbia kids are pretty well-rounded although some do focus exclusively on certain things. So yes, passion is important, but having a passion for something doesn't mean that you can't be a jack of all trades.
