I am trying to figure out how to buy a window air conditioner to fit in kids room in Monroe Hall. The windows on the floor plan are 3’ 10" wide and the only window units for sale say they fit a max width of 36 inches. So does anyone know if I can buy a regular AC and the installation guy will put filler boards in to fill the gaps - or do I have to buy a unique kind of AC unit?
Hi, @VSGPeanut101, and congrats on having a student starting at W&M! We had two kids there, and I have so many great memories that start with moving them in freshman year. Have you seen the air-conditioning approval page on the website? https://www.wm.edu/offices/residencelife/oncampus/residencehalls/acapproval/index.php#acsize It doesn’t look as if a special size is needed for Monroe. If you buy a regular-sized unit and have requested Facilities Management to install it, you should be all set.
Former Monroe 1W resident. Windows are normally sized or a bit larger. Get a unit with expandable wings to fit the width. It used to be you needed a medical note for an AC unit, but I lived there in the dark ages (84-85)
William and Mary won’t do
Won’t do what?
@Quagmiro, medical documentation is still required for A/C. The A/C approval information on the residence life webpage linked above makes it sound even more difficult to obtain permission than it was when my first daughter attended a decade ago.
Thanks to those who responded.
I wanted to post an answer in case any has the same question for future years.
We phoned facilities after carrying the AC to the room (first thing carried up!) and they came immediately.
The facilities guy came to the room with plywood spacers to fill the gaps. He had it installed about ten minutes into move in. No charges.
