“Both UC English courses and the UC math course must be completed by the end of Fall term prior to Fall admission” and IGETC must be complete. That’s about it.

You could ask your counselor about TAG and they should be able to tell you whether or not you qualify.

However, I have to agree with SkWz, staying an extra year might not be so bad. Apply this year and see what happens. Keep your options open.

I transferred in 3 years. I Took 1 year of general biology ( didn’t count for LS2, LS4 at ucla). Took only 1 semester of calculus physics. Finished all other pre-reqs including ochem. Transferred to UCLA.

Well if I stay 3 years I could finish everything but you know…i’d prefer to finish as quickly as possible. But if it comes to that I’d do it, no problem I just want to get all the info i can right now.

Also sorry for the newb/stupid question but what does it mean complete IGETC? What does that consist of?

but anyway thanks for help so far, im going to try and talk to a counselor soon.

IGETC requirements are specific to the CC you attend. If you go to your CC’s website and go to the transfer section, there should be something regarding IGETC on there. You could also ask your counselor about IGETC; they should give a print out of some sort that tells you what you need to take to get certified.

Completing IGETC basically fulfills the general education requirement for most UC’s. You won’t have to take the fluff classes such as Art, Cinema, Philosophy etc. once you transfer.

Wow I had no idea I had to take those classes. God such a waste of time. All I’ve really done is English 1A, Math, and Psychology. I don’t have any Arts/Humanities.

Also let’s say I wait until 2011 to apply. Since Bio will be impacted then, how badly do my chances of getting in decrease? Even if I applied with TAG?

I believe your chances increase once you complete IGETC and most if not all of your major preparation to being accepted under a certain major (talking about UCSD). As long as you follow TAG requirements, it’s a guaranteed admission to SD.

Ok so even if I apply in 2011 when Bio becomes an impacted major at UCSD, if I have finished all my pre-reqs and IGETC and I apply with TAG I’ll still be guaranteed admission?

You are definitely guaranteed admission with TAG, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get into your desired major if you apply for Fall 2011.

Here’s what UCSD has to say about it:

"Transfer Students

For admission purposes, this cohort will not be affected until fall 2011. Until then, transfer students will be admitted to any biology major without restriction. In fall 2011, the target number of new transfers will be 200. The UCSD Admissions Office will rank, according to transfer GPA, all students that applied. Admissions is solely responsible for admitting transfer students and for assuring that a target of no more than 200 new transfers will enroll as Biology majors.

The division expects transfer students to have completed all of their lower division course work required for their major at the time of transfer."

ah ok i see. that sounds kind of brutal though, only 200 students? do you think it would be worth waiting until 2011 then? i will have all my pre-reqs done but since i won’t guaranteed admission as a bio major then that’s kind of a problem. My GPA would hopefully be around 3.5 by that time, would that be enough to get me in?

Hey Little_Duck, it seems to me that it might be most beneficial to you to apply this upcoming fall with TAG when Biology is NOT impacted. They want ALL pre-reqs done, and only 200 will get in according to GPA. Your ~3.50gpa may not be bad my most standards, but competing for 200 spots with ALL the community college applicants in california/UC’s? That sounds real tough.

UCSD is up there with UCLA and UCB in the Biology department. My view is sure, you might have to spend a little more taking those lowerdivision classes, but you already saved yourself a lot of money by going to CC. Not paying for room/board, not paying for those stupid IGETC classes that you can pay $20 a unit instead of $6000 as a fulltime student at UC’s per quarter.

And besides, sure its a lot of money to fork over, but if you’re majoring in biology, you’re most likely going to attend Med-school or some sort of graduate school. There’s not many jobs you can get with a B.S. in Biology… So fork the money over now, invest in your education, do well, get into gradschool, get a nice job that pays well and with good job security, you’ll be glad you took the risk and invested in your future.
