The reason I am directing this question to BDM is that I recall him saying he has made C+ grades but still managed to get into multiple medical schools.

My question is, how did you overcome the bad grades, by doing well afterwards or by doing unusual, awesome ECs? Obviously, I am aware that grades are only one part of the process, but looking at someone else's experience will add to my perspective.

Anyone else in a position to answer this may feel free.

*I had a C in organic chemistry, followed by a B in organic chemistry and a B in biochemistry. My BCPM GPA was quite close to the OP’s. I didn’t have any trouble with medical school admissions.

With that said, I presented a very strong application in every other respect.

BDM…refresh my memory. I somehow recall that you mentioned (a long time ago) that you think that the fact that you aced certain questions (or a certain area) on your MCAT, and you think that made a difference.

Also…In what other ways did you present a very strong application? I know that you had a high MCAT…what else do you think made a difference?

Also, do you think that your C was more “forgiven” because of your undergrad and because you did better on OChem II?

Hm. I don’t remember what you’re remembering. I had a balanced MCAT score, including a strong showing on the biological sciences section, which includes organic chemistry. Other than that I can’t think of what I might have meant.

From what I’ve seen, a low GPA can be made up for by a combination of a strong undergrad AND a high MCAT score. I assume that a single low grade would work the same way.

I think I have a more extensive discussion lower down in that thread. BRM then gives his background for comparison. It’s a fun (and long) set of posts.

I think it was something along those words that I’m remembering.

I think there’s a big difference between a low GPA resulting from many lowish grades and a “good GPA” with just one or two lowish grades within the transcript.

It would seem to me that med schools know that there are a variety of profs out there (some good, some bad) so one or two “iffy grades” are not always a true reflection of the student.

My nephew is pre-med at Vandy. He thanks his lucky stars that he got the “good prof” for OChem. Sadly, his equally-smart roomie didn’t…and his grade suffered. It would seem crazy/nutty if just one “iffy grade” kept a student out of med school…when all else is good.
