Question for current JMU student

How do you find the Core Clusters? How difficult is it to get an overall 3.0+ in these clusters?

How is advising at JMU?

How easy is it to get in touch with a professor, or to find help when you need it for core cluster classes?

Core clusters are fine and very diverse. It's not too difficult to do well if you attend class and do your best. I have a 3.9 so far, but everyone has a different experience. My roommate has a 2.9 and works her butt off.

Everyone has an advisor at JMU and that advisor doesnt have too many kids to attend to, so they always have time for you. Students are assigned one at the beginning of the year based on major and then it changes when that choice changes.

Professors are extremely accessable. All have office hours every day when you can freely go see them, and you can make appointments through email or in person. One of my professors allows us to call him at home whenever we have a philosophy question, even on weekends.

Hope this helps!

Your post helps a lot. Thanks.

Why the difference in gpa btn. you and your roomate? Is it just the luck of draw regarding professors?

Which freshman dorms would you recommend? I think my son's first priority would be air conditioning, but I am not sure if that should be the first priority? He was thinking of Bell. How is that? We have not seen the dorms yet.

How hard is it to get admitted into the business school?

How hard is it to find a ride to and from Dulles?

The gpa difference is really just a matter of how prepared you were for college, I suppose. She had a hard time in her math courses. If you visit, ratemyprofessor.com you can get the inside scoop on professors before you pick them, which is helpful.

I live in Hillside, which is the same style as Bell and it is fantastic having air conditioning. It is also very close to everything. However, every dorm has its positives and negatives.

It is not difficult at all to get into the business school. I'm pretty sure you only need a 2.7 or something similar.

I'm from Southern Virginia so I'm not really sure. However, there is a ride board and a bus that goes to Vienna.

Thanks so much. My S just thought about it and thought he might not want Bell. He was looking at Hillside, McGraw-Long, or one of the tree named dorms. Are a fair amount of freshmen in all of these? Thanks.

Yes, Hillside and McGraw are both freshmen only, as are some of the treehouses. The treehouses are extremely far away from academic buildings, however.

Thanks. Any advantage to either Hillside or McGraw? My S was looking for air conditioning, and both have that.

Nope.. they are about the same. Hillside is a tad closer to everything.. but not by much.

Thanks for the help.
