Question for Parents of W&M Students

This question is for parents who have a prepaid tuition plan (529). W&M bills me for the full tuition amount even though they have seen for the past 3 semesters that the 529 plan pays a month or so after the semester begins. After it pays, I end up with a credit in the account which carries over to the next semester; however, I don't want to pay the full tuition from the start. (They don't automatically send a refund check either and if they did, it would be in student's name.) They said today that I could pay the difference, but they would probably put a hold on her account. Not acceptable IMO. Has anyone had any experience with this? Other colleges I have dealt with let you pay the difference with no holds. I know students with financial aid and scholarships don't have to pay the full tuition up front!

My daughter has been accepted ED to the class of 2016 and I have a Virginia PrePaid plan.

Since I don’t have experience yet with W&M I can only reflect on my other daughter who goes to a Virginia Private School and they accept the specified value of the PrePaid against their semester bill. I am given a bill which is a net of the overall cost minus the PrePaid and any scholarship monies. I get two bills a year and pay them within the specified 2-3 week window.

I was assuming that W&M and the Virginia VPEP office would work out a similar arrangement.

Evidently this isn’t the case.

I will have to look into this with the Finance Office.

Our prepaid is with another state, not VA, but that shouldn’t matter. Other daughter went to UVa and we only had to pay the difference.

D graduated in May so we used her prepaid Va plan for four years, and it was always paid before we got the bill.

We have a child at another Virginia state school and we only receive a bill for the portion that we owe, after the prepaid Va. plan.

I’ll be interested in hearing how W&M handles this.

although I am not a parent, I was on a 529 plan and there were never holds on my account and I never heard my parents getting a bill where the 529 wasn’t taken into account…

it should not be working the way you describe.

Instate with VA prepaid tuition plan has worked perfectly at W&M for both kids, one already graduated and one current student. We only get billed for room & board. Tuition has already been paid when we get the bill. Never had a problem.

I’ve had no problems with distribution from my daughter’s 529, or anything financial, that weren’t resolved immediately with a phone call, or promptly via e-mail.

Call the bursar’s office if there’s an issue with a time lag and they’ll sort it out.
