Hey CC,

I have a question regarding the materials needed for Chem 3AL.
On the website it mentions "Understanding the Prin of Organic Chemistry", is the book really necessary? Do you guys do HW out of the TXT book? Also, is the lab notebook similar to Chem 1A's notebook (carbon paper?)

Thanks!!

The lab notebook is very similar. I think the only difference is the space for TLC plates on the bottom. The textbook is necessary because it tells you exactly what you need to write for pre-lab, has the questions you have to answer for discussion questions, and just has good material on the lab techniques. Plus, I think you’ll use the same book for Chem 3BL, unless you take that like 4 years from now.

Yes, the textbook is absolutely necessary for you to complete the labs. It’s expensive but you will be using it for 2 semesters.

It is very simliar, however the TLC section is pretty much downright required in the Chem 3AL/3BL notebook. All GSI’s pretty much require that you get the notebook and it’s kind of inconvenient if you do not have it by the time the TLC sketching starts in your labs

No, you do not need to have the lab notebook that has the TLC portion. The only benefit of using the lab notebook that already has the TLC portion is that you will not have to use a ruler. If your lab notebook does not have the TLC portion, all you have to do is use a ruler to measure the Rf value. I have seen many people used their Chem 1A lab notebook which does not have the TLC portion and still did just fine in the class.

Yeah but they have to use the same type of notebook for 3BL anyway and they’re probably going to fill up the Chem 1A notebook with the 3AL stuff anyway, so they might as well buy the notebook now and use it for 3AL and 3BL.

Your first post made it seem like it was absolutely required to have the lab notebook with the TLC portion which is not true at all. Just saying! Sounds like someone is getting a little defensive…
