What is generally expected in an independent studies course? I know that this definitely varies greatly, but if I were taking the course for credit how does the professor grade one's quality of work? Also, do you think that I should take it for credit or not for credit? Thanks for the responses!

First, you and the professor will usually collaboratively create a syllabus for your independent study. Once the two of you agree as to what will be completed and how it will be evaluated (e.g., maybe a couple of minor papers worth 10% each, and a major research term paper at the end of the semester worth 80% of your final grade). Independent studies can be a great way to learn. I'd definitely take it for credit; that way you'll put in the effort to really get as much as you can out of it!

:Dindependent studies ROCKS!

i've only done one, as i just finished my feshman year, but i already have others planned out. You can jpooin a research team or create your project with a professor. from what i know, they usually require some project or paper or experience and that is basically your grade for most types. i'd take it for credit, that way it'll show up on ure transcript and give u some points towards graduation.they really help u study what YOU want to study.

It's really up to you and your prof to make it work. The MOST important thing is to stick to your commitment. The prof's giving you an hour of his limited time to hang out with you when he could be doing something else. So take it seriously. I speak from experience of my independent studies teacher yelling at me for not having done that week's assignment (even though I had a partner)... :(
